It has been 19 years since the US was hit by a category five hurricane, and 76 years since the most powerful hurricane ever to hit the US struck. Scientific American is turning into a joke.

“Winner of the 2011 National Magazine Award for General Excellence”???? Is that like a participation award?
(un)Scientific (un)American has been an embarrassment for quite some time now.
The SSHS is open-ended on the high side for a very good reason…we don’t actually know what the top-end Atlantic tropical cyclone intensity is. Regardless, calling for a “category 6″ is pure hype to support a specific agenda, nothing more.
You stole my idea!
Cool!
“Winner of the 2011 National Magazine Award for General Excellence”????
LMAO – They have it confused with this:

Hahaha!!! That was great!!!
I cancelled my subscription.
Me about GHW Bush time — was a subscriber since the 60s.
How sad. I had been a subscriber since my college days. However, already by 2004 it was evident that agenda was more important than science, so I canceled my subscription.
“is turning”???? HAS TURNED, more likely. You denier, you!
Why not have CAT6 ratings? Spinal Tap explains how they did it for amps so a CAT6 rating could make similar sense.
Just because they talk about Category 6, it does not mean there will ever be one. They are banking on the innuendo that “scientists” would not be talking about it if it was not a real possibility.
What about Category 7 and 8? Are they limited in their thinking? Why not go for the gold and talk about Category 100! That should scare just about anybody, . . . or not.
And, if they think the conditions are good for development of more violent storms than ever, what happened during the last 35 months when there were no US landfalls and no extreme hurricanes? The last 5 was almost 4 years ago. Maybe their methods for assessing conditions are not all that useful. How about visiting and revising this (failed) method. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different outcomes—it would be true here that occasionally they would get a random prediction right so that they would tenaciously maintain that they are not insane.
Category 6′s are more scary!
They should write for the SyFy channel. At best Irene will be a weak 5. Why do you need a new category for that? Camille was not upset she was only a 5.
No, but Al Gore was…
