On page 4, upper left corner, of the Newpaper referenced in the post, http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=NxFFAAAAIBAJ&sjid=_7oMAAAAIBAJ&pg=7093,467245&dq=snow&hl=en, there is an article titled “Hanging a thermometer”. It talks about the inaccurate reporting of temperatures because of improper placement. This was in 1888.
