They just came out with the first half forecast for this May here. Not cold (no snow thankfully), but not normal. About 5-10 degrees below normal for the next 2 weeks.
I think we are going to make a run at that record – meteorological and astronomical (as we are half way through the latter as well).
Have fun poking holes in their hypothesizes. But be careful not to lead credence to their scare tactics of ‘extreme weather events’. Continue to take the longer view of weather, climate, and extreme weather events. More people + more reporters = more events reported. Not necessarily more events.

The whole hoax of global warming is, in the 70’s they were scaring us that global cooling was going to kill millions. Then, in the late 80’s and since, global warming is going to kill millions. How about you take a look at what the NCS reporting data indicates: The distribution of the data points are getting dramatically tighter since the 1940s. If there is any “momentum” it’s trending downward and the distribution is getting less extreme.

He has an 85% accuracy and has been profiled by 60 Minutes.
CO2 is not the driver of weather, but the sun, jet stream, and solar weather allow for accurate predictions.

However if you look at their models, the original contention was that extreme weather would DECREASE! Why? Every AGW model says the most warming will occur in the non-equatorial regions. Which means the temperature extremes would decrease. Which also means extreme weather would decrease since it relies on extreme temperature differences.

Now lets “see properly” – The “scientific community” is made up of individuals that are naturally at odds. And rightly so – If that should ever change, science would no longer have a practical value, would it? Searching for a consensus in science is a vain and dangerous pursuit practiced by those with a personal agenda which only serves to blind objectivity and in turn any possible benefit(s) of the science.
A better endeavor would be to man up, stop pretending you’re something you’re not, refrain from injecting politics into science, do your own research, throw in a heaping tablespoon of common sense and make your own individual decisions about what is right or wrong in the science – not the scientific “community”.

Ditto. I am a conservative (though maybe not 100%), have two degrees in science, and have the same thought. To some extent, I think the problem is simply that not everyone “gets” the scientific approach. I haven’t made up my mind on the whole “global warming” thing. I wish there was a site that approached the question in an unbiased way, (ideally presenting both sides) without the intention of making fun of the opposition. It does appear to be a complex question and I’m suspicious of anyone on either side who thinks that it isn’t. Having said that, the article on this page is better than the majority of the comments.

Volcanic events could be a reason for ice ages. They might last longer than CO2 warmings because of the difficulty in the time it would take ice to melt. Plants making CO2 can’t grow in ice. I don’t think there is conclusive evidence one way or another on what action should be taken however.
Excuse me, but plants CONSUME CO2. They MAKE it only by decaying.

The issue with data and how you show your metrics (e.g. come to your conclusions) to others is that it can all be manipulated. Believe me, I do it all the time (with software bugs, not the weather). Nevertheless, it is 2-May-13, 9:15PM and nearly 87 F degrees outside and humidity so low I can hardly breathe and no cool weather in sight until Sunday. Where’s the warming? Did you notice on the May temperature chart that the red “average” line is flat, or slopes ever-so-slightly down? This tells us there has been climate COOLING (albeit less than 1 degree) since the measurements started. And the data points are getting bunched closer to the average line (versus highly distributed before 1940.) This indicates that temperatures are LESS volatile, meaning there is less year-over-year climate change than in the first half of the 20th century.
I know it’s only data from MAY, but it’s a monthly average of measurements taken as “All HCN Stations” for the entire month of May, every year for more than a hundred years. That’s thousands of data points, and the data doesn’t lie.

People forget how hot summer can be. It’s like as soon as we had heard of the idea of manmade global warming, suddenly every uncomfortably warm event became suspect.
It’s also lame; if its too hot in the city, the city and its citizens shouldn’t be bemoaning ‘manmade global warming’, they should work to reduce the level to which their whole environs is a heat island.
Bottom line, there is a healthy approach to reducing pollution, increasing efficiency and constructing ecologies that involve humans – and of course, reducing ugliness.

this period occurred approximately 7500 to 4000 years B.P. (before present)– long before humans invented industrial pollution.

The whole argument for global warming…uhh, climate change… hinges on two arguments.
The first is that CO2 regulates atmospheric temperature, therefor climate.
My first reaction to this claim was “Seriously? That doesn’t make any sense”. To think that a gas, even one as important to life as CO2 is, comprising less than 4/100 of 1% of the atmosphere overrides and makes irrelevant all the other factors of climate is ignorant and preposterous. Some people need to take notice of the fact that the nuclear furnace that crosses the sky every day heats things up and ask themselves, ” Gee, could that possibly play a part in weather and climate?”. Of course, that’s just one of many factors in the complex, chaotic, and poorly understand system that is our atmosphere.
The second argument is that we can accurately measure the average temperature of the atmosphere to a fraction of a degree.
We’re supposed to freak out and stop all industry because of a claim that the atmosphere has warmed 7/10 of 1 degree in 100 years? I’ve even read of people making claims of atmospheric measurements for the whole Earth of 0.14 degree. Seriously? I don’t know the margin of error for such measurements but I think any claim that it’s less than 1/10 of 1 degree is absurd.
History shows that even with temperature variations such as the warmists predict (2-6 degrees/100years), any life that can adapt really has nothing to worry about. It happened many times before the Industrial Revolution and it’s never going to stop. Actually, history shows that rising temperature is good for man. It’s when it goes the other way (and it will eventually) that we have a problem.
In studying climate over the past 15 years or so, and grokking intently, I’ve come to what I believe is a profound conclusion. Temperature will trend above average for a while, and then for some reason that will change and temperature will trend below average for a while. If the past is prologue (and it is) man will survive.
For those who believe argumentum ad auctoritatem is important, I hold a BS in botany with a minor in meteorology.
In addition to the record cold weather, the U.S. tornado counts are WAY down this year (so far)…look at the April 2013 preliminary numbers…

Lets see if we get another 1+ deg warming adjustment to the April temp. That March adjust was just pure fraud. The only adjustment that is suppose to be applied is TOB. All stations after 2000, with many before that, no longer receive final adjustments after TOB.(or at least I haven’t come across any). And you can’t tell me we had major time changes across the country for temp readings in March. The only plausible excuse I can think of is if there was a smaller than normal percentage of reports submitted. Maybe the delayed reports are in and a revision for March will happen. But I wont hold my breath.
To any and all who make the patently-absurd-on-the-face-of-it claim that snow in May is somehow proof of “AGW”; here is something to think about…
It can’t snow above about 1 C (34 Fahrenheit), and for May in ANY part of the US, that ain’t warm, that is WELL below the normal temperature for May 2nd and 3rd.
What causes snowstorms in May is a cold front backed by UNUSUALLY COLD air.
Also, please take note – if it is freezing in Minnesota on May 2nd, OF COURSE there are going to be some places, globally, which are ABOVE NORMAL for that date as well. Warm and cold air move around the planet on these things called JET STREAMS, and there are bound to be several places that are quite warm, in spite of the fact that the central part of the US has been well below normal for well over 2 months straight now.
The main thing to remember, is that the overall trend has been flat since 1997, and it now looks like the trend line has begun to flip back over to cooling (which is pretty much what anyone with half a brain or more would expect after 30 years or so of warming).

yesterday when I left work our afternoon temperature in Columbia, MD was 53 degrees. that’s about 30 degrees below normal. I’m always hearing about global warming when the temperature gets 10-15 degrees above normal, but it’s dead silence right now.
Since the beginning of February we’ve had so many days that are 10-15 degrees below normal that are at or above normal. I don’t remember a year this cool and I can remember back to the 1960s.
