The Sochi Olympics suffered some of the most extreme weather of any Winter Games. Athletes faced fog, rain and temperatures in the 60s. Research predicts that could become the new reality at ski resorts around the world. Porter Fox, the author of a controversial new book, “Deep: The Story of Skiing and the Future of Snow,” believes winter sports could be doomed.

The 1932 and 1980 Lake Placid Olympics both had less snow than Sochi.

Maybe the next winter olympics could be held in Myrtle Beach, SC, it has about the same winter climate as Sochi.

Indoor events can be held anywhere. Outdoor events were held in the mountains only a few miles from Sochi, which is the 3rd tallest mountain range in the world after the Himalayas and the Andes.
I watched snowboard competition in a snow storm on the last day of the Olympics. That was over by the mountains, not on the beach. SOCHI, (43.579893 N, 39.721069 E), is only about as far north as Boise, Idaho or Portland, Maine. Its not as far north as Seattle, Washington . SOCHI is located at sea level on the Black Sea where south winds often keep it ice free in winter. No climate change there.
Snowboarding?! What next? Hackysack? Dorito munching? Couch-surfing? Bongo-playing?

I was in SLC skiing last weekend and one day it was a few degrees above average. Of course the commies in my group thought this was the Beginning of Doom, when winter SLC temp.’s have been on a downward trend for 15 years.

Of course Sochi proper has palm trees. It never was a proper venue.
Come on Don the games were good, the facilities top notice and all events went off relatively problem free. Some sports were impacted by the soft snow and the hockey rink ice was the subject of complaints but Sochi was as “proper” as many other venues ie Vancouver 2010.

Sotji, located at the Black Sea, is protected from Siberian cold by Kaukasus mountain range, with peaks up to 5600 m. Sotji is a bath resort , definitely not a ski resort!

It looks like Antarctic sea ice has started to expand again. The Arctic is likely a couple of weeks away from maximum. So the global sea ice is on its way back up from its annual low. Oh dear. Alarmists must be wondering when it’s ever going to melt.

It may be worth noting that, as far as I know, the Russians don’t take this AGW business seriously at all. I’m certain that Putin gets his advice on climate from the Russian Academy of Sciences, and they’re on record as forecasting a possible LIA in the not-so-distant future.
I’m fascinated by how these people now cling to the anodyne phrase “climate change” while bringing in all of the hoary claims about global warming. Talk about tying yourself in conceptual knots.
Yeah, if Miami had a tall mountain next door, you could hold the Winter Olympics there.
