It is quite clear that periods of colder weather produce more violent tornadoes. The worst outbreak was in 1974, the peak year of the “Ice Age Scare.” Another big tornado year (not shown) was the La Niña year of 2008, which had very cold spring temperatures.
Tornadoes form when cold air collides with warm humid air. A warming Arctic should result in less extreme weather, not more. The opposite of what is constantly being claimed by some “experts.”
I remember a time when this would be a *DUH* post, as I have several books about weather that all say that same thing… Anthony has a post up about a study about fewer strong hurricanes in warmer climate…. another *DUH*. To me whoever paid for that study wasted their money. All of these things are common knowledge if you ignore the emotionial ranting of activists. This is why most weathermen aren’t so much AGW. It goes against everything they were taught. I am sure that the modern weather textbooks have changed to remedy that, but it doesn’t change the basic weather truths.
An interesting analysis would be to see if the temperature differences in US latitude bands correlated with tornado activity.
