Venus Weather Forecast

Venus has massive amounts of CO2. Temperatures on Venus are very hot. Venus is often (incorrectly) described as having a “runaway greenhouse effect.”

Surely the weather on Venus must be dominated by violent storms. We are told that more CO2 means more storms, and much more powerful storms. We are told that a few more ppm of CO2 will change Earth to be “unrecognizable.”

Well consider the plight of Venus – they have have more than 100,000 times more CO2 than Earth. And they have essentially no weather. The temperature is constant and there is almost no wind. No hurricanes, and no tornadoes.

Storms are driven by differences in temperature. Arctic amplification means that the temperature difference between the North Pole and Equator gets smaller. We would therefore expect global warming to reduce the number of severe storms, not increase them.
