You can now buy supersonic (lead-free) .177 pellets for pellet rifles. I tried some out this morning. They penetrated 233 pages of the phone book and damaged 350 pages. They also make a lot of noise, with a claimed muzzle velocity of 1300 fps.

The pellets are probably made of bismuth. What kind of rifle do you have? With that kind of velocity it sounds like it might be a Beeman/FWB?

Whatever the pellets are, they tend to ricochet. A few came back 50 feet from a piece of pressed fiberboard..
Yeah, that’s the problem with non-lead pellets. Lead either penetrates or goes splat. No ricochet.
With that velocity, that would hurt! They do make traps for air rifles and rimfire that are supposed to eliminate ricochet, or so I have read. my targets are further away for using center fire of .223 to 12 gauge projectiles
They say not to shoot the SS pellets into pellet traps.
The only place in Fort Collins where you can shoot a rifle costs $20 an hour. That is why I like the pellets. They cost 1-3 cents compared to 40 cents for a .223 round. Plus I don’t have to travel as far.
My range is in my yard and I pay about 25 cents bulk for .223 FMJ. If I go JHP it runs 40 and up depending on manufacture. Living in the middle of a forest means I have to watch out for varmints and an air rifle does not have the stopping power for humanitarian elimination of the threat to my livestock. So 5.7 for the wife or .223 as average range to target would be 35 to 100 yards.
I could probably take out small varmints with the SS pellet but the dogs and cats keep those under control. We just shoot enough to stay accurate and be prepared for the bobcat that enjoys having one of our ducks to dinner and the Coyotes that tend to explore the property looking for a snack. They seem to favor chicken!
How about using a cross bow “pillow” target backed up by a board? That might reduce the bounce back or even a bail of hay should slow down the projectile. I am assuming you have a farm supply close by!

I shot an AR-15 last year with a suppressor and could barely hear it. My Ruger Ranch Rifle is pretty loud though. I normally have to travel 35 miles to fire it where it doesn’t bother anyone.
Real red-necks like me use a 308 to shoot snowshoe hare …… they are nasty when cornered. 🙂

Do not have many chances to take out the trusty odd-6, but the 9mm and .45 are frequent travellers to one of many local ranges. $10 no time limit + ammo.
