Ice Not Disappearing At Mendenhall Glacier

James Balog from The University Of Colorado set up a camera to capture ice loss at Mendenhall Glacier Alaska, and seems to have shown the opposite. Time 00:00 is 2007, and time 00:26 is either 2009 or 2010.

The video narration claims that the glacier is “deflating” and will probably retreat on to the bedrock “in a few years.”

I have seen this project on the Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel some time ago and this was supposed to show the world a retreating glacier.

    Well, it is not.

Good thing he does show it though.

  2. Tony Duncan says:

I see your one piece of odd evidence about one glacier
and raise you the majority of the glaciers in the rest of the world

Oh and here is actual data about the Mendenhall Glacier
    relevant part being
517 m recently (1997-2008) and will likely retreat ~180 m out of Mendenhall Lake in the next several years.

    • Scarface says:

The only reason he has put the camera there is, that is has been declining. However, it stopped. Strange? No, it is not. Just a sign that mankind still has no clue on what drives climate changes.

Your remark ‘will likely retreat’ is exactly what is wrong with CAGW.
It depends fully on the notion that more CO2 WILL warm the earth.
Well, CO2 follows warming, it doesn’t cause it.
There are other forces at work that determine our climate.
Stop following the hoax, do some serious searching and reading and you will find out.

      Good luck!

Kilmanjaro is over 17000 ft per the link and at that altitude it is above the freeze line. USGS posted earlier this year that the temperature there did not get above freezing so AGW is not the issue.

Further, without knowing the altitude of all the mountain glaciers mention making a judgement of what is causing the retreat is not possible.

As for Glacier National Park, I enjoyed riding thru and stopping at Lake MacDonald on the western side. The sign said it was a glacial lake. Huh. It was formed 1000’s of years ago by melting glaciers. Who do we blame for that?

We are talking about glaciers that primarily grew for 5 0r 6 hundred years are have been retreating for 1 or 2 hundred years. Absolute proof that natural long term weather patterns are being observed in all the regions of the globe as the current patterns are repeats of past patterns which were not driven by human induced climate change.

  4. peterhodges says:

just from looking at the glacier you can see that it was retreating at the beginning, and is now obviously advancing.

i believe it is the hubbard who’s advance threatens to cut of some towns and maybe cause some dam flooding

  5. Ford Prefect says:

Most of the videos on this site start in 2007 which on all the arctic ice charts is a low point from a 30 year mean. Why do these scientists believe that change is linear and in one direction only? Since the ice charts seem to indicate a cyclical cooling trend has begun wouldn’t this suggest that the Glacier will begin to advance? If it does, then are we heading toward a catastrophic ice age or merely going through a cycle of warm and cold.

  6. omnologos says:

Is there any glacier over at EIS that has shown clear signs of retreat? And besides…if “climate” is a concept only valid over 30 years or more, what are a couple of years of images going to tell us?
