At only 600 years old it is possibly still firn and not yet compacted completely. As each location has its own properties and the amount of pressure provided by new snow layers needs to be taken into consideration at some locations on Antarctica there is little yearly snow and that requires longer for compaction to complete. That was the primary difference between the cores from Antarctica and Greenland as well as differences in cores from different locations on the Antarctic continent. The actual air bubbles in firn may be only a year or two old or a couple of hundred years old. That was the problem with dating CO2 concentrations in the ice cores among other problems encountered.
This type of stuff has fascinated me for years!
