Met Office Chief Climate Scientist Has Difficulty Reading Maps

“This is not a global event; it is very much confined to the UK and Western Europe and if you look over at Greenland, for example, you see that it’s exceptionally warm there,” she said. “The key message is that global warming continues.”

http://www.independent.co.uk/

This is the same misinformation that Hansen has been repeating. Most of Greenland, Alaska and Western Canada are running well below normal temperatures. It is -46F on the Greenland ice sheet headed down to -63F later this week.

These people are completely incompetent.

Australia is far below normal.

Russia is far below normal.

Antarctica is far below normal.

The Pacific Ocean is far below normal.

  1. Strick says:

Not to mention rare snows in China and coal shortages due to the cold weather.

  2. Mike Davis says:

That is a government position so the statement does not have to be based on reality! Also why would we expect something coming out of the MET to resemble the real world when they spend their days playing Virtual World with their super Game Boy.

  3. Edward says:

8-10 degrees C on Baffin Island at the mo’, you’re ‘aving a larf!!!

More likely, no monitoring stations – so fill it in wiv red innit.
    Northern Canada heatwave?……….Yeah right!

  4. ES says:

The temperature in Alert was –5C this morning:
    http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/trends_table/pages/ylt_metric_e.html
    Yesterday’s max was –4.8:
    http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/trends_table/pages/ylt_metric_e.html
The record for December 21 is –6.9:
    http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/almanac/almanac_e.html?ylte
This should be a new record!
All stations in the Eastern Arctic are above average:
    http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/forecast/canada/index_e.html?id=NU
Click on the station and at bottom read normals.

    • There you have it. Eastern Canada is the entire world.

    • suyts says:

lol, Your statement gives a whole new meaning to the song “We Are the World”. And I thought us Americans had the market cornered on egotism.

Sorry to hear you guys sweating through your -5 C temps. Let me know when it gets appropriately cool for you.

      • PJB says:

I am currently “basking” in a -2 C “heatwave…. it is about 5 C warmer than typical for this date. Cold comfort to know that others are freezing their butts off so that I can have this little advantage… 😉

    • peterhodges says:

that would explain the rapidly melting ice

  5. DJL says:

It’s warmer than normal somewhere in the world so that cancels out everywhere thats cold, and if it doesn’t Hansen will put his finger on the scale and make it so.

  6. Green Sand says:

Steven, I think the Met HadCrut3 November anomaly has surfaced, can’t see an announcement but if you have a look at:-

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climatechange/science/monitoring/hadcrut3.html

    Halfway down:-

“The monthly data used to make this diagram are available in this format.”

There is a link on monthly data which give Nov as 0.431C. Needs checking as the Cru data, has not yet been updated:-

    http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/data/temperature/

If correct I make the anomaly for the year at 0.49C, “hottest” looking doubtful, but still no news about Vicky’s SST 0.03c

  7. suyts says:

Well, at least she’s on message if not anywhere close to being correct. Apparently Jim has her on speed dial?

  8. Charles says:

I just checked out my hometown and the town where my university is in N. Ontario Canada. The towns are 900 miles apart and both are showing average daytime high temps of -7 C which looks from the maps to be about 17 degrees colder than the map says it is. if there is no weather reporting stations in places the default temps must be to show warming, but I know my university has a provincial government weather reporting service right there not far from the engineering department where I usually spend my time.

  9. Andy Weiss says:

Not only has Europe and Australia been cold, many states in the eastern half of the US has averaged 8-12 degrees F below normal for December, with no real warm up in sight. Augusta, GA has had normal weather for DC this month.

  10. Andy Weiss says:

Sorry, I forgot to mention China and Russia as well.

  11. Justa Joe says:

I love hoe they show northern Canada blazing red implying that the temps are hot when they’re actually frigid.

    • mikegeo says:

If I’m not mistaken, GISS only uses one actual temperature station in the Canadian Arctic which is at Eureka on Ellesmere Island. It has such unusual flora and fauna given the special microclimate it enjoys, that its also referred to in Wikipedia as the “garden spot” of the Arctic.
All the Arctic is projected from here. Its irrational to do that as there are many other real stations in the Canadian system. But I guess Hansen has his agenda.

    • Ed says:

No, the map is of temperature anomalies not absolute temperatures. Red means warmer than usual not not hot.

So if the average temperature at this time of year in northern Canada is usually say -20C but now is -15C, that means it’s warmer than usual and therefore red. It doesn’t mean it’s hot on the tundra.

  12. PhilJourdan says:

The met Mouthpiece does not expect anyone to actually CHECK behind what she says. She is preaching to the choir, so they will use her words to rebutt skeptics – without realizing they are being played for the fool.

  13. Doug Proctor says:

Looking at charts on Lucia’s site, I note that the month-to-month variations of so-called anomalies are around +/- 0.3K, though the trend is about 0.18K/decade. The trend from 1980 is around 0.6K. But Hansen et al/MSM keep talking about this month or that, like the November 0.74K value. With such monthly variation, a monthly number is meaningless. The multi-year trend is all that matters. But then the number Hansen says would be the same year after year. There is no “news” in that, and hardly alarming.
Even with graphs the average reader doesn’t get what the misinformation is. What happens when December or January is 0.45K? Does that get trumpeted? Maybe the sceptics need some volume on our speakers.

  14. Karmakaze says:

Go to the link you provided, scroll down and on the left you will see a place where you can look up historical data for the same station.

Select the same day in the year 2005 and you will get this info:

    Mean Temperature: -40°C
    Max Temperature: -36°C
    Min Temperature: -46°C

Then select the same day for 2009 and you will get:

    Mean Temperature: -26°C
    Max Temperature: -24°C
    Min Temperature: -31°C

2005 was the hottest year ever recorded, and 2009 was tied for the second hottest with several other years (1998, 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2007).

Notice something about those numbers? It was just as cold in Greenland during the hottest year on record as it is right now.

That’s what happens when you take local weather data and try to compare it to global climate data.

The liars and deniers hope you’re too stupid to realise that.

Next he shows several ANOMALY maps, such maps are meaningless unless you can see the average that the anomaly is being measured from. These maps show how much different from average the temperature was. So for example if these maps are based on a 30 year running average as they usually are in climatology, then these maps show the comparison between the temperatures now, and the average temperature over the last 30 years – during the height of global warming.

It’s like something I saw yesterday when someone was making a big deal over the fact that Germany is suffering from what is shaping up to be the coldest winter in TEN YEARS! Seriously? 10 years ago we had the hottest years ever recorded, and the German winter is not as cold as it was then?

The liars and deniers rely on you not to think about what they are saying. They want you to hear “record low” when they really mean “average year”. Right now we are in the most extended solar minimum since the “Little Ice Age”, and yet temperatures are HIGHER than even the last solar maximum!

30 years ago was when we first started NOTICING global warming, but it has been happening for over a century. So unless these record colds are records that go back further than a century, then they are not even as cold as they were before global warming, despite everything else saying we should be having another “little ice age”.

    • The Greenland map in the article is anomalies. -63F is much colder than -40C.

    • suyts says:

Sis, you much on reading comprehension? I’ll give you the first sentence in the article posted, again…..“This is not a global event; it is very much confined to the UK and Western Europe and if you look over at Greenland,…….”

To go slower, I’ll explain what this means. The “she” referenced in the posting is Professor Julia Slingo, the Met Office’s chief scientist. She is insisting that the current cold conditions in the U.K. is confined to the U.K. and Western Europe. She references Greenland as verification of her assertion. With me so far? Steven, then shows us temp anomaly maps from various parts of the globe, where we see, in fact, that many other parts of the world are indeed suffering from colder than usual events. In other words, proof that refutes Slingo’s assertions that the cold is only confined to the U.K. and W. Europe.
You see, it was Slingo making an assertion about current weather conditions not Steven.

Now that wasn’t hard, was it? What liars and alarmists do when they can’t think of anything else to do, is to make up arguments that had absolutely nothing to do with the article. (We call this creating strawman arguments.)

But you did show some consistency with Slingo, so, I’ve got to give you credit. She displays a difficulty reading maps, while you display a difficulty reading. But, I’m used to that with liars and alarmists.

    • Mike Davis says:

I see that another Puppet from the Chicken Little Brigade stopped by to attempt to entertain us with fantasies!
You appear to have a very short record for hottest year but you folks are really good at making shit up! Which Pathological climate site did you get your misinformation from?

    • Justa Joe says:

It’s fricking cold. What more do you want? It wasn’t the “deniers” idea to obsess over every degree of temperature deviation above or below “normal”.

  15. Andy Weiss says:

For all we know, the greenhouse gases might be preventing another Ice Age, which would be the ultimate disaster for humanity (aside from nuclear war). We really have no idea what is beneficial and what is harmful.

  16. JeffT says:

Globaloney at its worst. These guys, Hansen, et al, should be blackballed.

  17. Cthulhu says:

The image you carve up to show Australia, the Pacific and Antarctica colder than average shows Greenland warmer than average:
    http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/map/ANIM/sfctmpmer_01a.fnl.30.gif

And look on Sunday almost all of Greenland is more than +10C warmer than average:
    http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/map/ANIM/sfctmpmer_01a.fnl.28.gif

That’s the problem with looking at a daily image. The anomalies change day to day. Who knows what day she was talking about, but greenland is indeed higher than average.

  18. Mike says:

    Hi

I don’t agree with AGW theory but the maps above certainly raise some questions. In particularly the Australia / NZ map. How do I interpret the maps? is it degrees centigrade surface temperature? Because there’s absolutely no way that Sydney and the gold coast get temperatures below 0 degrees C ever, even in the middle of winter, and it’s summer at the moment. In fact the map shows below freezing temps all over australia which is simply not true. It never ever reaches -20 degrees C anywhere in Australia and it certainly didn’t on the 20 dec. I live in Auckland and on the 20 Dec it certainly wasn’t cold, in fact it was 19 degrees C during the night yet the map says surface temp in NZ between 0 and 5 degrees C ?

Am I missing something here or reading these wrong?

  19. John Grant says:

You know if the info has come out of embarrassing Britain, it is most definitely a load of cobblers.

  20. THE MET OFFICE LED BY VICKY POPE -should stop trying to forecast future climatic conditions because in a word they are CLUELESS.

I can’t believe how clueless they are, plus they throw out their BS spin game.

IN A NUTSHELL THIS IS WHAT I THINK IS HAPPENING.

I am not going to go into depth ,becasue I have said it many times on various sites. Example would be Dr. Spencer’s website, under his last two articles apparing there.

HERE IT IS IN A NUTSHELL-Low solar activity, increase in high latitude volcanic eruptions, more methane released in high Arctic, leads to a warmer Arctic from surface through lower levels of the stratosphere,in contrast to lower latitudes, this in turn creates the meridional circulation, this in turn results in more snowfall, and thus more land areas in N.H. to be coverd by snow, this in turn increases earth’s albedo, which in turns causes colder conditions in the N.H.

The above also explains why solar irriadiance does not have to decrease by to much to cause this condition to come about in the N.H.,and it also explains why the same process can effect the N.H. more, in contrast to the S.H.

Geography of land ansd sea areas being paramount.

  21. It will be necessary to add another factor in the formula; the (intended?) destruction of the Gulf-stream ; it functions as a conveyor-belt that brings warmth to European coasts. It is said to have stopped. If that is true, winter will not end and Ice-age is certain. “They” may have been trying to convince us of exessive warming in the future, just to make us prepare for that, so we are NOT prepared for the opposite. Another part of the war on humanity by the de-populationists (the rich). There has been snow in places ,deserts and tropical areas that haven´t seen snow for 100 years and the winter here (DK) is considerably colder and longer than the last 15 years.

  22. cp says:

I can just imagine how you would react if the Met Office used a forecast temperature anomaly against an undefined climatology as evidence for something. Come on – this community deserves far, far better.

  23. Mick J says:

A question. How are the polar type projections produced?

    Mick.

  24. tachius says:

The weather is changing thats for sure even if people cannot agree why we can agree it is. This has been the most abnormal winter I can recall where I live, my hole country not just area. Colder in parts it never ways being dumped on by snow, but where I am we should have snow to our knees by now, but the grass is green and it is raining

  25. d I will take them on anytime , on their stupid man made global warming, and them and the hoax global warming morons trying to spin the recent colder winters ,somehow related to their asinine man made global warming BS theory.
