Guardian : Despite Falling Temperatures Over The Last Decade, Global Warming Is Happening Faster Than Expected

An online news service sponsored by the world’s premier scientific association unwittingly promoted a study making the false claim that catastrophic global warming would occur within nine years, the Guardian has learned.

The study, by an NGO based in Argentina, claimed the planet would warm by 2.4C by 2020 and projected dire consequences for global food supply. A press release for the Food Gap study was carried by EurekAlert!, the news service operated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) , and the story was picked up by a number of international news organisations on Tuesday.

“This is happening much faster than we expected,” Liliana Hisas, executive director of the Universal Ecological Fund (UEF) and author of the study, said of her findings.

But, in an episode recalling criticism of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), when the UN climate science body wrongly claimed the Himalayan glaciers would melt away by 2035• , the UEF claims about rising temperatures over the next decade were unfounded.

Climate change is happening much faster than previously thought. But warming at such a rapid rate over the next decade is impossible, climate scientists said.

  1. latitude says:

    “and if this trend continues”

  2. TheChuckr says:

They are absolutely correct. climate change is happening faster, they just got the sign wrong, temps are cooling, not warming!

  3. WordPress has shut this blog down. They won’t let me make any new posts. No reason was given.

  4. M Carpenter says:

Meanwhile, Sea Surface temperatures are dropping like a stone!

  5. Andy Weiss says:

They are using their bully pulpit to tell shameless lies, with the clear intent of scaring people into surrendering their rights and money.

  6. Mike Davis says:

The quality of the organizations that promote scientific research. It is nice to know they made a half assed attempt to close the barn door after the live stock had already left. Nobody remembers the closing of the door but they will certainly remember the stampeded that destroyed the town as the live stock ran through.

  7. Tony Duncan says:

    This is a historical moment.

The first time I have ever seen Steve and Gavin agree on something!

  8. peterhodges says:

the paper they are talking about has already been dumped by the aaas because of it’s ‘impossible conclusions’. haha. won’t stop it from appearing over the place and generating 1000’s google hits, however. by next week your congressman will be citing it.

    • Tony Duncan says:

peter, so how many people have cited this a week after, as an accurate warning of the near future?

I see a couple of news releases in the couple of days after it came out, but the overwhelming number of references are that the study is flat out wrong.

  9. Green Sand says:

Re-comment, put against wrong post earlier. Things not getting any warmer at the Met or CRU.

Are the Met Office and CRU being shy?

The HadCRUT3 temperature data series has been updated for December and therefore for 2010. Data on the CRU site:-

The December anomaly is 0.251C which gives 0.475C for the year.

December is quite a drop from November 0.455C.

This further confirms the HadCRUT3 cooling trend:-

  10. Kevin says:

    Surrender, Dorothy!

  11. Hal says:

    ‘Down’ really means Up.
    ‘Flat’ really means ‘Up’ squared.

I think I can now grasp this climate science math.

  12. Terri Jackson says:

The temperature rise in the second half of the 20th century was just 0.6celsius. Of this 0.5celsius was due to natural causes (see S Akasufu director of the International Arctic research Centre in Fairbanks alaska) in Natural Science December 2010). He predicts the temperature rise by 2100 will be a mere 0.5celsius, insignificant.

  13. Wrangler Wayne says:

The global warming since the mid-1970s to 1999 and for the last century is mainly due to reductions in the rate of global ocean deep-water circulation—or Meridional Overturning Circulation—which has occurred. Global temperatures have followed closely the fluctuations in solar output and ocean circulation cycles, not carbon dioxide trends. This circulation is driven by global ocean salinity variations. CO2 changes play no role in these ocean changes. Scientists now report that the doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide would raise global temperatures merely 1 degree Celsius. Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have risen by less than 50 percent since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. The contribution of CO2 is minute at most.

  14. Peter Bridge says:

Does CO2 causes any change in temperature at all? I mean the CO2 in the atmosphere is only 0,05% more or less, it is an insignificant amount, i wont cause any significative change much less the 5 degree Celsius until 2100 promised by the CO2 freaks in 2006.
By the way the antarctic ice cap increased and become cooler during the last years, but no one talks about that any more, apparently it doesn’t matter any more.
CO2 global warming is now a religion that no one can go against.

    • Tony Duncan says:

I just read somewhere a study that the overwhelming number of “experts” on TV have been people saying that Global warming is a hoax, and I see all sorts of people on almost every media site “going against” the “religion” with impunity
