Tracking The Drowning Of Manhattan

The guy in the Google Earth picture working next to the West Side Highway has a special sea level tracking device.  When his weed eater can no longer spin due all the water, it is time to evacuate.

At current sea level rise rates, this could happen sometime in the next 3,000 years.

No no no, those things are submarines and that green stuff is seaweed. See look my computer model says Manhattan is already 2 m under water.

Sorry the carbon tax thing is getting to me.

    BREAKING NEWS:

    BBC – 30 May, 2011
Germany pledges to end all nuclear power by 2022

Germany’s ruling coalition says it has agreed a date of 2022 for the shutdown of all of its nuclear power plants.

Environment Minister Norbert Rottgen made the announcement after a meeting of the ruling coalition that lasted into the early hours of Monday.

This is both bad news and ‘good’ news as it represents an experiment for Germany.

They will either increase use of fossil fuels whether internally or imported or they will import more nuclear energy from other countries like France or alternative energy will work or fail. Maybe a mix of imported nuclear and alternative? Interesting times are ahead. 😦

    • klem says:

And good riddence. The nuclea power plants in Germany have never made money, they have been an economic drain on their economy for decades. I assume they will be replaced by fossil fuel power plants.

      • mohatdebos says:

Where did you read that German nuclear power plants have never made money? They are extremely profitable. That is why previous German governments have not shut them down. Just track the stock price of German utilities that own nuclear power plants since the Fukishima disaster if you don’t believe me.

I would bet 2022 will come and go and these plants will continue to run because they have the lowest marginal cost of generating electricity.

    Hey Goddard (Institute) guy, Steve…

I figured something out better. I ventured into enemy territory, not two blocks up from me (http://oi52.tinypic.com/2vlppua.jpg), but online, at SkepticalScience.com. They had posted a video of Jim Hansen harping on and on and on about sea level and why one must discount the Greenland ice core. I wrote five paragraphs of prose, professional enough to get through their goofball moderation system. I had included a mere JPG from your site (the image of sea level in which you changed the light yellow satellite data that showed plunging sea level) and that was enough to cause a kiniption: instead of responding to the content of my post, further discussion was moderated out with the excuse that I had committed the sin of linking to Steve (“triple point of water”) Goddard. So I looked it up and there was some oppressive thread on WUWT a year ago where you rubbed the minions at WUWT the wrong way. And *oh* are the likeminded minions at SkepticalScience.com ever proud of themselves for having a soundbite to diss you with!

I find your site to be a refreshing break from them both. A pox on both their houses, I offer.

But what I most clearly realized was that these creepy dudes are not so much the cultists I had imagined but more like uber climate nerd groupies (http://oi54.tinypic.com/54hs8g.jpg) on a site with a highly controlled message. I started getting moderated, selectively. It gave me a single flash of white hot anger but then I chuckled. In a flash I saw them for what they were: small people (http://oi52.tinypic.com/28su98g.jpg). They are up to their eyeballs in crap. The ultimate conspiracy theorists, sickly greasy and oily little cretin misfits. I felt suddenly like I’d followed a cute barfly into a crack house. Oops!

“You must learn how to emerge out of unclean situations cleaner, and if necessary to wash yourself with dirty water.” – Frederich Nietzsche (“Human, All Too Human” 1878)

Facts don’t affect. It’s a fuzzy warm hive they inhabit. That’s why it was so hard to figure them out (and I’m still not done with that). They are *not* typical loons, nor neurotics, nor budding nazis. They are dust on a chrome bumper, fleas in a circus, lost souls come to roost on dung piles, grubby handed data pornographers, the meek, trying to inherit the Earth.

“Perhaps and not perhaps, the biggest difference that exists between eroticism and pornography is that eroticism is divine and offers an opportunity while pornography is infra-human and brings bad luck. The pornographer with the prematurely aged face of a turtle, a dirty old one-armed person impudently bald and warm offers you on street corners dirty postcards with his little turtle paw that he just barely dares take out of his jacket armored in filth. Eros, the god of love, on the other hand, stands up and raises his arm in the sky to show his microgemetic tie, the quiver that he carries hanging from his incorruptible alabaster neck.” – Salvador Dali (“The Erotic Metamorphoses” 1968)

Keep up the good fight, and hold your head high.

      Nik,

I think you are onto something with your comments about SkepticalScience. Once I was commenting over at No Trick Zone and two goons from SkepticalScience.com were trolling away. I constructed a line of questioning like “sea level rise?” “more intense storms?” blah, blah, blah and linked each question to a skeptical website (Real Science was one) wherein the post was really only presentation of the data with a bit of commentary.

The responses I got simply attacked the websites I had linked to – no mention of the data! I thanked them for taking the bait – their comments clearly showed a complete lack of interest in science. They are indeed just little people, with little ideas, holed up in their insular little world.

As far a well-functioning psychopaths, here’s a book I read for fun (outside my usual interests – it looked interesting):

A possible explanation for behavior demonstrated by the “Team”.

I recall a technology used for over a hundred years now, it’s known as ‘sea defences’ technology. No matter how you look at it Hansen is wrong on this one. 😉

  5. NikFromNYC says:

OMG I figured out another thing. Jim Hansen is a classic highly functioning psychopath. That’s why he vocally over-emphasizes his caring daddy role. He’s *all* about message, and damage control, not science. That’s what gives him away. There’s *no* real humor, no mistakes, and a severe lack of actual professorial goofiness. He’s dead serious. I’ve seen him walk around, around here. He always looks like he’s climbing a hill, vigorously. Not a single Columbia professor of hard science I ever met (not even the biology tagalongs), ever, not even once, offered up a SERIOUS demeanor, a perfect facade. Their shit stank and they knew it. That was the entire lesson!

Is Al Gore a psychopath too? Gosh, I wonder!

I have some aspect of disturbing detachment in my own temper, so I see it more clearly than most might.

  6. Andy Weiss says:

The entire alarmist movement is deadly serious and devoid of any sense of humor. It would appear that these people have actually bought into their own BS about saving the planet. It’s hard to talk of grave peril and laugh at the same time. It must be even harder to talk of grave peril, see nothing happen and then be ridiculed by non-believers.

  7. Dave G says:

I had an alarmist friend show up at my house when he found out I was a non-believer, he tried for 2 hrs to change my views. Unbelievable how they think, I told him not to turn his(gas)global warming car around in my non-believer driveway LOL
