Fox News Joins In The Alarmism

The threw in a photo taken several days ago with a very long lens. The fire is not burning on laboratory property, it is very unlikely that it will, and even if it did the nuclear materials are secure. The GFX/WRF forecast is for light winds and higher humidity. NCEP is calling for lots of rain over the next two weeks, as the monsoon season kicks into high gear.

No! Not Fox! Hype and Alarmism. Say it ain’t so.

Seriously, I never know what to think about an issue until Bill O’Reilly has a panel of blonde bimbos. That’s when the facts really fly.

    /Sarc?

  2. Kaboom says:

What was that about yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater?

  3. pyromancer76 says:

Fox seems to be about Older Guys, Blond Bimbos (I know, not fair as many of them are at least as intelligent as O’Reilly and crew), and an occasional brunette knockout. Period. Never any Older Gals with equivalent experience to the Guys. Also Fox is a clear Corporate Crony station mainly for Establishment Big Government Republicans. For example, on Greta, after the court case came Newt, Karl, then Newt again. Gov Sarah Palin was advertised, but I couldn’t wait until the last few minutes. Getting past boring. Also, from the beginning, apologists for unvetted, inexperienced Obama. Thanks for the blogosphere where there is real investigative journalism. We need to start counting audiences — and perhaps begin to stop whining about the mainstream (lamestream) media. Perhaps even their audiences are dwindling to the 30% who will support failed-Obama (and failed-green energy) no matter what.

    • Blade says:

      Totally agree.

So I flipped on Fox to see if Greta had any information on the Constitutionality of the EPA ruling. Instead I find her going on about that young child murder (albeit a terrible case) with her panel of stupid obnoxious celebrity lawyers.

Personally I would rather have my eyes and ears sealed shut with a nailgun than watch and listen to that nightmare 😮 It is pretty much the OJ shtick all over again, which is probably the only reason she even exists today.

I really can’t stand O’Reilly, he is dumb as a stump and he proved it when discussing AGW in the past. Zero intelligence. His show is not improved by having a bunch of cackling hens spout off about politics or current events.

Ironically, when a story is breaking these days I find CNN has more credibility (gulp!) because Fox is often re-running something anyway. CNN is an enemy of America, I get that, but one thing they have in their favor is that they do not have multiple people talking simultaneously.

That is a peculiar trademark of Fox, they have done it since the beginning when they went on-air. They have no mic monitors or noise gates, not on any of the shows. We play this little game in which we mute the sound as soon as people are talking simultaneously. We have never lasted more than a couple of minutes.

I think the beginning of the Iraq thing was the ending of my watching the news channels. I went to movie rentals and web news because I realized cable was a waste of my money. I kept Cable for Broadband internet but that is not available here in the sticks so I use satellite internet and no TV. With a monthly subscription to Netflix the wife can watch movies on her computer.

  4. aletho says:

I’m in the area colored blue Steve, and it’s not raining today. In fact it’s been hot, dry and windy as it has been almost without respite for months.

Perhaps weather forecasting is a poor choice for this site.

    • That is weird that the weather is currently in the future.

    • Paul H says:

      DOH!!

    • Sundance says:

      @aletho

You might want to consider a vacation to Brazil where record setting cold temperatures are devestating crops to the tune of loss estimates of 40%. But we all know it’s man made cold.

      • aletho says:

Sure thing Sundance, but I may have trouble accessing the airport here as highways have been closing due to extreme smoke. I’m sure that there is no possibility of any radioactive contamination in the airborne ash because they have never, ever contaminated any of the grounds around Los Alamos. Right?

Good thing I can feel safe in my knowledge of how pure the air is because I don’t pay any attention to alarmist media. Oh, and I’m sure that the fire won’t spread for a few weeks while we wait for the monsoon season. After all hot dry winds have never caused fires to spread rapidly. Never.

      • Sundance says:

Well you know how the media is, as they are reporting the AZ fire was started by illegals and all. I feel bad for you because now that the courts have decided that you can’t sue me for barbecuing, you will have to wear a bubble boy type suit or live in a controlled environment chamber to breathe pure air whatever pure air is (will have to stop wind to get the air PURE? Get rid of flowers trees with all the unpure pollen too?). ;*)

  5. aletho says:

    Sundance,

It’s oh so good to see you relating to others on human terms, you must be a well adjusted thing.

In closing, I will just post Steven’s bold quote from yesterday:

“I spent a good part of the day running NCAR’s WRF weather model, and there are a couple of things going on which are relevant. The humidity has gone way up with a good chance of rain tomorrow. Also the wind is likely to shift to NW tomorrow” –

As I was saying, perhaps weather forecasting is a poor choice for a site like this. It has a tendency to discredit.

  6. aletho says:

    Update on Steven’s ‘Alarmist’ story:

“The fire has scorched the facility’s Tech Area 49. It burned an additional 20,000 acres in the past 24 hours”

“The fire drove 25,000 people from their homes”

    http://www.examiner.com/human-rights-in-national/viscous-fire-scorches-los-alamos-atomic-bomb-lab-tech-area-49?CID=examiner_alerts_article

I guess FOX NEWS must be really alarmist to report on something like this, right?

    DOHHHH!!!!!

Steven, your blog here is doing a disservice to your cause. Get a grip.

  7. aletho says:

Maroon to you too Steven. I suppose that your faith extends to fires stopping at property lines.

    • I’m very familiar with the area. I worked as a forest ranger in the Santa Fe National Forest and lived in Los Alamos for more than 20 years. There are many reasons why it is extremely unlikely this fire will burn the lab or the town site..

      • aletho says:

I guess we should take that on faith then, eh? Authoritative say so. Is this what your blog promotes?

And you stand by your assertion that FOX NEWS reporting on this situation is “alarmism”? Disturbing.

      • suyts says:

aletho, if you think it isn’t safe there, I’d move, or at least find some temporary place to be. Truly, I do, and I’m sure everyone else here wishes you and all of the people there to remain safe through this ordeal.

But, perhaps you can forgive us for believing the sun will still come up tomorrow, or, perhaps you think we should all panic at the unlikely prospect of a nuclear lab getting scorched? I’m sure that would be helpful.

I can’t help but wonder, is this drive by more motivated by political and ethnic views of the mid-east than it is about Fox new coverage?

    • Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

      Aletho:
I would not call Fox An alarmist arm of the MSM because I put the entire MSM crowd into the Chicken Little / Boy Who Cried Wolf Genre which is a subset of the Fantasy Genre.

  8. Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

I will see how that pans out because your model gives me 5 / 6 inches in week two.

  9. aletho says:

    SUYTS,

“I can’t help but wonder, is this drive by more motivated by political and ethnic views of the mid-east than it is about Fox new coverage?”

No idea what you are getting at here.

Obviously the nuclear industry would prefer that the media simply ignore the ever increasing threats posed by nuclear contamination and waste. The fact is that the surface of the earth is a very volatile place.

Steven’s bogus assertion that the coverage is alarmist amounts to blustering ignorance which reflects quite poorly on AGW skepticism due to his making himself the butt of ridicule. My suggestion would be to give up the inane attacks on responsible journalism and also to drop prognostications.

    • suyts says:

Its responsible journalism to whip up public perception to the belief that this catastrophe is to an inordinate dimension?

And, it is alarmist. That’s what journalism has engaged in for the past several years. It gives an errant proportional perception. And sorry, properly contexting alleged earth shattering events is part and parcel of skeptisim.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not making light of your plight, you have my sincerest sympathies, But, world news? Really? For better or for worst, this story will only be a story until there’s something else to use the skew the public perception of some other catastrophe.

Much like the fires of Texas earlier this year, these fires will be picked up on, exaggerated, giving the impression that most of the state is on fire. This will be used by the media, it will be used by the alarmists, anti-nuke people and probably prairie-dag advocates if they have any there, and maybe even if they don’t. And, in the end, it won’t come down to “stuff happens”, if there is significant damage or loss of life to come, there will be people blamed by all of the groups I listed. Usually, it will just come down to the average American’s fault. We’ll either have emitted too much CO2, or too casually regarded Smokey the Bear or was just racist against prairie-dogs.

But make no mistake, if something really bad happens, it will be someones fault. And, the more they make of it, the more penance or pound of flesh will be demanded. Regardless of the reality, because our beloved journalists were …… how did you put it?……………. Responsible.

      • Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

Responsible Journalism! Now that is an Oxymoron if there ever was one!

      • aletho says:

One ingested particle of radioactive material can easily kill.

The airborne debris from Los Alamos poses a threat across most of this continent if not beyond.

Readers and viewers are rightly interested.

Steven’s demand for ignorance is backward and reflects very badly on AGW skepticism.

      • suyts says:

“One ingested particle of radioactive material can easily kill.

The airborne debris from Los Alamos poses a threat across most of this continent if not beyond.”
        =====================================================
Uhmm, so you’re afraid someone is going to start eating the radioactive material sometime soon?

And, sis, no, the smoke isn’t going to come get anybody across the continent or beyond.

Now, if you are truly worried about how this appears for the skeptical community, you need to check yourself.

      • Latitude says:

One ingested particle of radioactive material can easily kill……
….but only two or three bananas can set off a radioactive detector

    • Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

      aletho:
I have terrible news for you! You are going to die! It is plain and simple! you as well as every other living thing on this earth will die. The primary certainty in life is DEATH! Not a time of occurrence but it is coming, as certain as the fact you were born, you will die.
The entire solar system of which we are a portion is a volatile place to attempt to exist for a short period. It is LIFE, Get used to it and get over your obsession with looming imaginary disaster is not called for. There is nothing you can do but accept what life gives you and learn to adapt in an extreme environment. That is what living is all about.
If the Shit was not refined into a usable state it would still be in the biosphere anyway the threats are not increasing in level they were always there. You can thank environmental groups for the level of danger you now face because of this fire. Smokey The Bear was the forests worst enemy.

    • Squidly says:

WTF? .. ultimately, this has NOTHING to do with the nuclear industry .. get a grip .. really? … you are worried about nuclear fallout from the burning of land around Los Alamos just because they have worked with nuclear materials? … Come on. I currently live in Tennessee, and I am willing to bet that levels of radiation from fires here would be MUCH higher than around Los Alamos. This would have much more to do with soil composition than the nuclear industry…. Sheeeeshh .. give me a break.

And yes, this Fox News report (I watched similar this evening, while watching Fox News as I do every night) is way past alarming, it is sensationalism. This story tonight made me rather sick to see that even Fox News is stooping down to the alarmism level. Pathetic!

  10. aletho says:

    Latitude,

I don’t have any interest in bananas. Your diversion is a pathetic attempt to avoid dealing with reality.

There is no comparison between radiation received by proximity and ingestion.

Airborne particles are easily ingested by many means, most of which I’ll guess that you are unable to imagine.

  11. aletho says:

    And there it is.

At stevengoddard.com plutonium is safe to ingest.

Loony. Kooky. Out of this world denial.

    • You are a nutcase. Plutonium is an extremely heavy metal. It doesn’t blow around in the atmosphere.

    • suyts says:

aletho, do you have a point? No one said anything about plutonium being safe to ingest other than you.

      • aletho says:

        Read the thread suyts:

“Uhmm, so you’re afraid someone is going to start eating the radioactive material sometime soon?

And, sis [?], no, the smoke isn’t going to come get anybody across the continent or
        beyond.”

        Pure bald faced denial.

      • suyts says:

lol, ok, so you believe someone is going to start eating the plutonium…… mine was of a rhetorical nature, but if you’re serious, I guess I can oblige and give the time to respond to you.

As far as the smoke, no, its not going to bother me or anyone else outside a certain distance. Denial? Is that a euphemism for having quite a bit of experience with such things? Sorry, I don’t do the butterfly theory, reality shoots it down quit often.

But, speaking of denial, if the situation is as bad as you seem to think it is, isn’t there something you should be doing other than trying to excite the general public…. I mean, shouldn’t you be planting warning signs about not eating the plutonium? (BTW, you should look up the energy necessary to aerosolize the stuff.)

Remember Japan? The fires, the nuclear reactor…… and here we are, a continent away. While it was a horrible tragedy over there, that stuff, it didn’t float over here and bother me. Did it get you?

aletho, I’m trying to be nice, and I really am sympathetic about your situation, obviously you aren’t that greatly concerned or you wouldn’t casting dispersions my way, but if you insist on that type of projection, I’m going to have to go straight into ridicule.

  12. aletho says:

“The sky is falling, the sky is falling.”

Quite literally. Local authorities have just issued a health warning on particulates. An elderly neighbor just got hustled off to the hospital with severe respiratory problems.

The fire is still no where near contained, but FOX News is “alarmist”. Right?

    • Yes, having your face in a campfire is always a bad idea.

    • suyts says:

Gee, is this New Orleans part two? aletho, if things are really that bad, quit whining on a skeptic blog and do something to help yourself…..

      • Squidly says:

he/she needs to get out while they still can….

aletho, head East my friend, don’t stop until you get somewhere safe, like China…hehe

    • Squidly says:

aletho, when was the last fire around Los Alamos? I am assuming by your reaction to this (and perhaps that of the media), there has never been a fire around Los Alamos, as if there had, there would be nobody left to talk about it.

      wow….
