Editorial : When Government Makes Its Mind Up To Do Something

Campaigners say Obama’s re-election, superstorm Sandy and New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg’s endorsement – predicated on climate change – put climate change back on the domestic agenda.

Opinion polls suggest public concern in the US about climate change was rising even before Sandy. Campaigners argue Obama needs to engage on climate, if he wants to safeguard his legacy as president.

“President Obama’s re-election provides him with an opportunity to seal his legacy as a truly transformative leader, but he needs to address climate change,” said Andrew Steer, president of the World Resources Institute. “I think history will judge any president from now onwards not to have succeeded if he doesn’t really grapple with this issue seriously.”

It is time for Obama to get serious about stopping hurricanes and heat waves. If he is half  as successful at bad weather prevention as he has been at deficit reduction and job creation, then we should expect to see four more years of nothing but unmitigated high cost bullshit out of Washington.

It is wonderful having a government controlled by, and elected by, complete morons.

    Under pressure? Yikes!

Lapse rate! Doesn’t anybody remember about the lapse rate?

An increase in pressure will also increase Global Warming by a vast margin!

Quick! Denounce The Guardian for endangering the whole of the planet!!

    Steve, Steve, Steve,
You must give the POTUS credit for his obvious skills at:
    a) being a focused political opportunistic well versed in Chicago style dirty politics,
    b) standing by (and keeping out of the way) while an outstanding Chicago-style, political machine utilizing state of the art Big Data was built and used in his name by the beneficiaries of the pork barrel, and
    c) being willing to play by “prison rules” – lie, cheat, bully: winning is the only thing.

How else can you explain that he squeaked by with his pathetic lack of useful accomplishments
(other than keeping the goberment trough full and the cronies swilling)?

Considering the massive deficits during his Presidency so far, it truly would have been a colossal failure to lose a second term.

At least you didn’t have Gordon Brown as Chancellor then Prime Minister.

Gordon “Brownbeard” Brown has an unparalleled record of total incompetence.

Most people are aware of his sale of 375 tons (yes tons) of the Bank of England’s (i.e. we the taxpayers) at the bottom of the market in 2000. This has cost us around £10,000,000,000.

That is nowhere near the top of the list in terms of money wasted and/or stolen from the taxpayers.

    The list currently stands as:-
    Loss/Waste (£bn)

National Debt, capital value of increased interest payments 2000

Destruction of Private pension schemes 150

Increase in Public Sector Payroll, creating unfunded pension liability 200

Off balance sheet PFI liabilities, massive taxpayer liability 171

Power generation, what do we do when the lights go out, wind energy scam 120

Tax credits , fraudsters have stolen and are stealing billions 15

    Sale of Gold reserves @ $250/oz 10
