NYT April Fools Joke : Hansen To Quit Pretending That He Is A Scientist

James E. Hansen, the climate scientist who issued the clearest warning of the 20th century about the dangers of global warming, will retire from NASA this week, giving himself more freedom to pursue political and legal efforts to limit greenhouse gases.

  1. Olaf Koenders says:

Retire? Should be fired – from a cannon..

  2. Chewer says:

Even NASA understands how bad he’s effected their credibility.
You can bet they offered him $ to hit the trail!

  3. Chuck L says:

Who will his replacement be? It is probably too much to hope for that they will be an objective scientist with no global warming ax to grind.

  4. Mike says:

    Tamper Hansen gone.

Who do we have to thank for the quick exit?

    Any bets?

  5. gregole says:

Is there a polite term for “jackass”? No? Well then, good riddance.

  6. Dave N says:

Legal efforts? Perhaps he should start with asking his legal advisors how best to explain all the data tampering; if he wants to issue legal challenges, that’s the first place he’ll be attacked.

  7. kirkmyers says:

James Hansen is now free to peddle his end-of-days prophecies on behalf of the highest bidders. As he has so ably demonstrated, if one is willing to toe the line (and abandon all principles), there’s big money to made from the global warming fright-fest. Universities and environmental NGOs are awash in research dollars extracted from taxpayers who are routinely fleeced by unscrupulous con-artists posing as climate scientists — the self-appointed saviors of mankind who have decided to cash in big time on the life-and-death struggle to save our dear planet from devilish CO2.

  8. tckev says:

NASA’s Malthusian catastrophist and data destroyer is to retire. I don’t believe it.
Have the men in white finally come for him?

  9. John B., M.D. says:

“He’s done the most important science on the most important question that there ever was,” said Bill McKibben, a climate activist who has worked closely with Dr. Hansen.

    • kirkmyers says:

McKibben is the consummate global warming crackpot. He plays the part to perfection, and his public statements are laughably entertaining. In recent years, his “climate change” shtick has attracted a faithful following of AGW scaremongers who enjoy howling about the evils of CO2, a plant nutrient that is essential to all life on earth. Their ignorance is exceeded only by their gullibility.

  10. mikegeo says:

I’m hoping the new supervisor will want to examine Hansen’s data fiddling to determine what he did and why. Surely the new guy will want to be beyond reproach going forward and if the data is bad, hang it on Hansen and start with a clean slate. We’ll see what Hansen’s left-behind cohorts do. Try and maintain the status quo, or clean house and blame Jimmy for shoddy practices.

    • squid2112 says:

I must say, with the world cooling right now and the AGW crowd looking pretty bad, this would be an excellent opportunity for GISS to cleanup its act and cast the blame on goofy Hansen. Especially if Hansen does what he says, he will look all the more unstable and provide an excellent scapegoat for GISS.

Further, if Hansen begin challenging in court, which I hope he does, this could reveal lots of good information. Hansen will get his ass mopped up in court and discovery could be devastating. Hansen would leave a courtroom with Zero credibility as his own words and actions have contradicted himself over, and over again.

I need to run out and get more popcorn, this may get interesting.

    • Hugh K says:

Don’t hold your breath Mike. GISS is in bed with Columbia U. Best prepare for a Hansen clone. Cue Who lyrics; “Meet your new boss….same as the old boss.

The left’s tactic has always been and remains to first target an organization that they perceive as potentially beneficial to their cause. Next cunningly replace the leadership/staff of the targeted organization with their own and never, ever relinquish their power to non-team members. I have witnessed this tactic ranging from The Department of Education which starts indoctrinating our young from the earliest stages to The AARP which dazzles aging seniors with slick PR. And last, but equally important, the once media watchdog that after the leftist takeover has morphed into a lapdog to keep their audience on message – the left’s message. Once the left is entrenched….there is no exit strategy.
My solution to all of the above does not lie in the hope of changing these organizations from within. But to do everything within my power to not financially support these organizations the left has taken over while giving full support to new concepts/organizations that can compete and optimally replace these leftist-controlled organizations. I.e. – Supporting vouchers/home schooling/conservative schools of higher education in lieu of utilizing the DoE school system, supporting Amac in lieu of AARP, alternative media instead of the establishment media, etc, etc. No doubt it is an uphill battle that will require decades to replace all of these organizations the left has so deviously hijacked to promote their propaganda….but failing to take action is a suicide wish.

  11. Andy Oz says:

A Nuremberg style climate trial might be a good place to start.

  12. Traitor In Chief says:

James should now end the AGW madness once and for all by throwing himself into an active volcano. This is the only way to appease Gaia for the sins of man and his evil gas. Obama can officiate, and, what the heck, throw himself in after Jimmy for good measure.

    • Mike says:

“Dr. Hansen says he senses the beginnings of a mass movement on climate change, led by young people.”

Adults don’t buy Hansen’s hocus pocus, so now he’s bringing the climate gospel to young people.

What is it with creepy climate alarmists and their obsession with the young?

How many doomsday cults have used young people in a similar fashion? It’s always the same style of preaching catastrophe, end of world scenarios, that is used to groom young followers. I guess at the end of they day it’s their youthful susceptibility that makes them soft targets.

In the Climate Alarmist Handbook it must implicitly state that when you fail or can’t debate adults you must try and convert the young.

      • gator69 says:

“What is it with creepy climate alarmists and their obsession with the young?”

The only way to get leftists is to brainwash the young. If people are taught how to think instead of what, they will choose liberty every time.

      • Brian G Valentine says:

They think they can convert the young to useless Socialists, just like they are.

That works okay until they are compelled to support other people, and not live a parasitic existence off of Mom and Dad with nothing better to worry about than the “environment”

  13. Follow the money trail.

  14. Ted Sunday says:

Can we now sue him for his data tampering? Now that he does not have NASA to pay his legal bills. it’s time to go after his BS.

    • miked1947 says:

Nasa did not pay is legal bills before! George Soros did along with Particia Hines and other suckers! He provided them with a cause they could use to reach their own goals. Many in the scientific community have Jimmie to thank for leading the way to more research dollars. When NASA was set to lose funding, Jimmie came up with a plan that allowed NASA to generate more research funds for climate research.
There are still many in the GISS group that will continue in Jimmie’s footsteps. The Gav is one. He has already tried to become a household name, that have come to know quite well.

  15. Brian G Valentine says:

I don’t wish I had his money, I wouldn’t know what to do with it.

I wish I had his power of persuasion, though – I have been complaining that AGW is junk science for 30 years, and Hansen won the media war (for a while).

Without Hansen, AGW would have remained another crackpot idea like polywater and AIDS vaccines. Would have saved Western countries a lot of money and agony, too

  16. Bill in AZ says:

In a just world, Hansen and Mann will end their days on opposite street corners in downtown Podunk USA wearing their “End is Near” sandwich boards.

  17. grumpydenier says:

This just about sums up those that think they’re are ‘saving the planet’ and actually believe it.

‘Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.’
    – C.S.Lewis

As for the ‘consensus’ there aren’t the words to describe them.

    • Eric Barnes says:

      Great quote. Thanks!

      • grumpydenier says:

It really fits the bill with these well-meaning, but misguided environmentalists, doesn’t it?

It’s the devious ‘scientists’ and politicians, who prefer to turn a blind eye to the debate, who rankle with me. I’m too long in the tooth to expect much in the way of honesty from politicians but the ‘serve the nation’ ethos has all but disappeared completely nowadays.

In this respect, I do fear for my grand-children; not the remote possibility of a touch of warming sometime, maybe, in the future. My biggest worry is if the threat of a cooling world comes to pass.

  18. philjourdan says:

If they add Mann, they could hit broadway with a new “3 Stooges” show – Gore (as Moe), Hansen (as larry) and Mann (as Curly).

  19. Wyguy says:

Well past his “sell by” date.

  20. Justa Joe says:

Ol’ Jimmie “Death Trains” socked away a couple million in climate dough for his retirement. Don’t worry.

    • Brian G Valentine says:

Prediction: Jimmie’s gonna have some problems with John Law for not reporting his income to NASA and probably to IRS

It’s gonna cost Jimme more than he was “compensated” to keep his ass out of Federal prison

  21. great put up, very informative. I’m wondering
why the opposite experts of this sector do not notice this.

You must proceed your writing. I’m confident, you’ve a great readers’ base already!
