1980 US Boycott

In 1980, President Carter refused to let American athletes compete in the Moscow Olympics, because the Russians had invaded Afghanistan. (Carter believed in collective punishment of Americans.)

The Russians gave up on Afghanistan ten years later and withdrew.

In 2001, the US invaded Afghanistan. Twelve years later we are still in Afghanistan, which Obama calls “the right war.”
