2010 : Ehrlich/Gore Inspired Terrorism

Why Is the Media Ignoring Discovery Channel Gunman’s Radical Views?

James Lee, who walked into the headquarters of the Discovery Channel Wednesday, taking hostages, was an environmental radical who believed people were destroying the planet.

According to a manifesto of sorts he posted on the Internet, Lee believed that “Civilization must be exposed for the filth that it is” and demanded that the Discovery Channel and its affiliated networks stop airing programs “encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions.”

Oddly enough, it’s a view shared–perhaps not directly but at least in the same general neighborhood–by any number of prominent thinkers and talkers who take a dim view of the impact mankind has on the planet.

Lee, who not only holed up with hostages but had pipe bombs strapped to his body, was, in the general sense, antimankind–as he said on his Web site in a somewhat distorted echo of the prophecies and prescriptions of Zero Population Growth founder Paul Ehrlich. “Saving the Planet means saving what’s left of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population. That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies!”

Ehrlich, it is worth noting, predicted in the late 1960s in his book The Population Bomb that the resource needs of mankind could not keep pace with the growth of the world’s population and, as a result, global famine would be commonplace by the mid-1970s or early 1980s.

According to news reports Lee was also influenced, alarmed, and possibly even spurred to action by former Vice President Al Gore’s film An Inconvenient Truth, which holds out equally dim prospects for the future of mankind as long as necessities like the internal combustion engine are allowed to continue in operation.

  1. Gina says:

The media didn’t ignore his views.

ABC called him an “environmental militant”, and a”radical environmentalist”
    http://abcnews.go.com/US/gunman-enters-discovery-channel-headquarters-employees-evacuated/story?id=11535128

Huffington Post called him “crazy” and posted his demands:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/01/james-lee-discovery-demands_n_702506.html

NBC reported that Lee said “Nothing is more important than saving … the Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels. The humans? The planet does not need humans.”

CBS: “At the trial, he said he began working to save the planet after being laid off from his job in San Diego. He said he was inspired by “Ishmael,” a novel by environmentalist Daniel Quinn and by former Vice President Al Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.””

LA Times: “James J. Lee, who was protesting what he said was the network’s promotion of overpopulation”

There’s no evidence the media were ignoring Lee’s politics. (And let’s not forget – US News is also part of the mainstream media.)

    • If the media was paying attention, they would have noticed the extreme rhetoric of the left recently about “doing whatever is necessary to stop global warming“. Instead, they have been spouting idiotic baseless innuendo about imaginary right-wing terrorists.

When CNN wants to push an agenda, they do it 24×7 – not a few obscure references in passing.

      • Gina says:

Paying attention to what, exactly? This event happened three years ago, and there are no new developments in the case.

      • Paying attention to the extreme rhetoric of the left since Sandy. Have you been paying attention?

      • Gina says:

Were you watching CNN when this was current news? Are you saying they weren’t following the story?

Oh, and speaking of CNN, here’s there (online) coverage of the incident:
        http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/09/02/maryland.discovery.channel/index.html

      • Ben says:

        Gina,

Visit google again and type the following into the search box.

        Type in
        eric rudolph olympic site:cnn.com
        You get 5,000+ hits

        Type in
        “james lee” discovery site:cnn.com
        You only get 1700+ results

CNN was still covering Eric Robert Rudolph in 2012. So much for not covering old stories.

        Still don’t see the disparity?

      • Gina says:

Raw hit counts don’t mean much – it doesn’t say much about the content. Those 5,000 articles include articles like this one which devotes a paragraph to James Lee and less than a single sentence to Eric Rudolph.

        http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/16/opinion/bergen-bombings/index.html?iref=allsearch

      • Gina says:

        Oh, and Ben:

If you type in james lee discovery channel in the CNN search box, you get over 38,000 hits. Not that that proves anything, either.

      • Gina says:

Finally, re: Rudolph – most of those articles were from 1996 (when the bombing occurred) to 2005 (when he was sentenced.)

With James Lee, there was no such long-drawn out trial, as he was killed at the scene by law enforcement.

      • Ben says:

RE: Gina – “If you type in james lee discovery channel in the CNN search box, you get over 38,000 hits. Not that that proves anything…”

It proves something… It proves CNN uses an OR search. just type “james lee” into the search box. 98 hits.

Type eric robert rudolph olympic bomb abortion clinic into the search box, and walaa! 71,000+ hits.

      • Ben says:

RE: Gina – “With James Lee, there was no such long-drawn out trial, as he was killed at the scene by law enforcement.”

So going with your theory, there was no trial for David Koresh either.

CNN search box (the Gina way) waco david koresh reno
        31,000+ hits

      • Ben says:

RE: Gina – “Raw hit counts don’t mean much – it doesn’t say much about the content.”

There were not raw hit counts, these were links.

You really need to learn the difference between a hit count and a link.

    • Please tell us about CNN’s 24×7 agenda to end left wing terrorism. ROFLMAO

    • Andy DC says:

When young people are repeatedly told that they are doomed, due to selfish oil companies and evil white males, it is bound to create some degree of psychosis. After a recent conference I attended, run by hysterical alarmists, I overheard teenage girls say they might as well jump off the roof. Is that normal? Doesn’t the exaggerated doom and gloom hysteria adversely affect the mental health of young, impressionable people?

    • Justa Joe says:

Most people don’t know who James Lee is, and even less know that he was an eco-terrorist. Mission accomplished by the lame stream.

  2. redjefff says:

Because in their ultimate drive to ‘perfect’ humanity from what they disapprove of, in their so tolerant, anything (but what I dislike) goes, manner “That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies!” and “ (not) encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions.” is not what left wing ideology believes. They fundamentaly are unable to see that others may have a rational, moral and sane approach that conflicts with their thoughts. They have 2 ways to deal with this… demonize, which has failed in climate debate, or ignore…

    Kermit Gosnell anyone????????????? http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324030704578422883948238160.html?mod=WSJ_Opinion_MIDDLETopOpinion

Perhaps America’s greatest mass murderer? On trial right now. (Knocking)… Hello… MSM… anybody there?

I can understand why print media ad revenues are at 1950 levels. And why many get their ‘news’ from Jon Stewart (sp?).

  3. redjefff says:

Need more narrative? http://weaselzippers.us/2013/04/16/lefty-rag-salon-lets-hope-the-boston-marathon-bomber-is-a-white-american/ “White privilege is knowing that even if the bomber turns out to be white, no one will call for your group to be profiled as terrorists as a result, subjected to special screening or threatened with deportation,” writes author Tim Wise.

Yup. there will be no call for non-gun bomb control. No TSA. No nothing like that at all.

“This has been most obvious in the context of recent mass shootings. In those awful episodes, a religious or ethnic minority group lacking such privilege would likely be collectively slandered and/or targeted with surveillance or profiling (or worse) if some of its individuals comprised most of the mass shooters. However, white male privilege means white men are not collectively denigrated/targeted for those shootings — even though most come at the hands of white dudes.”

This explains Chicago’s murder rate how?

  4. tckev says:

The problem is that this very deluded individual is labeled right-wing by the left-wing media when in fact he is a product of their own. He is an extreme lefty – self-hating, low-life that should be under medical treatment for his obvious mental condition, and the security of the wider public.
