Disturbing Normalcy Of Arctic Ice Continues Unabated

When climate experts say that the Arctic sea ice is melting at an unprecedented rate, they mean that it is right at the 30 year mean.

“…Arctic sea ice is …right at the 30 year mean” is excellent news. 2012 and 2010 were also at the 30 year mean at this time, but dropped below by ~mid-May Now, what would be really interesting (and tie warmists britches in knots) would be to see Arctic ice stay within the ± 1 SD of the mean. That would be a pronounced shift, headed in..which direction?

    Oh. Cooling.

    • gator69 says:

      What 30 year mean? 1979-2006 = 30 years?

    • F. Guimaraes says:

Notice how 2009 brought a high recovery during the summer, after just 2 years of prolonged solar minimum. It was at the SD band up to the beginning of July!
Now, imagine what a Maunder type minimum, lasting for decades, would do.

    • George B says:

2012 was due to an exceptionally bad storm which broke up a lot of ice. The problem is that Arctic ice floats on water so it can be broken up by being battered by heavy seas or blown out of the Arctic into the Atlantic as happened in 2007. Unlike Antarctica where ice ablation is more a function of temperature, the Arctic is more a function of wind and seas. So far this spring it looks like the ice is being pushed against the North American side of the Arctic Ocean but a lot can change between now and September.

If you’re an alarmist its worse than you thought 😉

  3. kirkmyers says:

“Melting arctic sea ice” is the one scare the Warmists like to trot out annually. If the ice doesn’t cooperate and refuses to melt according to the dire predictions, they’ll have to invent a replacement scare story. I can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with next.

As the AGW theory collapses, the scaremongers are becoming increasingly desperate and increasingly entertaining. Some of their recent pronouncements border on the comical — e.g. warmer temperatures causing more fresh water, which, in turn, causes the formation of more sea ice.

Despite mounting evidence to the contrary, the “CO2 is evil” True Believers remain devoted to their doomsday prophecy. And those of us who dare to challenge their doctrine are branded heretics. We should take pleasure in our apostasy. In science, skepticism rules.

” … warmer temperatures causing more fresh water, which, in turn, causes the formation of more sea ice… ”
This is totally funny, isn’t it?:-)

“Skepticism Rules” – I’m going down to the T-shirt shop and have them print one of those up! thanks for a great idea!

  4. Andy DC says:

The only noticeable trend is toward a wider range between summer and winter. Maybe hotter summers and colder winters? If there were just warming, you would not think the ice would recover that well. Also, you probably need far more than 34 years of data to establish a meaningful climatalogical trend.

  5. Jimbo says:

Here is something for ya Steve.

Met Office (UK cold Spring 2013)
“This hypothesis remains contentious, however, and there is little evidence from the comparison between the cold spring of 1962 and this year that the Arctic has been a contributory factor in terms of the hypothesis proposed above. Figure 13 shows the mid-troposphere temperature anomalies for 1962 and 2013; over the Arctic they are almost identical and reflect the negative NAO pattern. It is hard to argue that Arctic amplification had changed the equator to pole temperature in a systematic way to affect the circulation this spring.”

The Alarmist propaganda Activist agenda driven Junk AGW/CC Scientists launched this for Earth Day.

Note the NZ Victoria University is a hot bed of pro AGW/CC scientists. It’s also one of the worst Unis in the land for PC status quo Symond Says Glove Puppeteering. Very Pro Group Mind Think!
The same goes for Oxford University.

Climate change scientists tell their story:

There is growing international interest in a new film to be screened around the globe on Earth Day (22 April) which shows the astonishing range of human activity and scientific endeavour going into the race to understand the world’s changing climate

More than six years in the making, Thin Ice is a response to climate sceptics and a compelling look at the changes taking place in the Earth’s atmosphere, oceans and ice sheets. It documents the hopes, fears and sense of urgency driving scientists studying these changes.

The makers of the film—Victoria University of Wellington, Oxford University and London-based DOX Productions—want as many people as possible to see Thin Ice immediately after its launch.

    Screening Details:

    • The film will be available for viewing online at no charge for 48 hours from the beginning of Earth Day. Visit http://thiniceclimate.org
