  1. Consensus is an old sceptical rule of thumb used to decide whether a claim is likely to be true. However, the rule of thumb only works on subjects well understood. If you seek a consensus of opinion from experts on something that is not well understood (the climate in 50 years from now, the economic outlook a few years from now, what mathematical strategy is best to derive a grand unified field theory), then your consensus of expert opinion is generally no more reliable than guessing.
