Other than the basic shape, an airsoft gun doesn’t look much like an AK-47. It is made of shiny plastic, has a white plastic slide instead of a shiny metal bolt, and weighs about one tenth as much as a real rifle, so it is held quite differently.
The kid was holding the toy in one hand. They yelled at him from 30 feet and he turned to see why. If it was a real eleven pound AK rifle and he was planning on shooting it, he would have had both hands on the weapon. People shoot rifles with two hands. Didn’t anyone tell the police that?
I hope they get prosecuted, but this is America – and it will just be one more “no hesitation” police whitewash. There is no rule of law in this country any more.

Look at the bright side. Progressive legal frontiers are contested daily. The University of Colorado is taking long overdue steps to outlaw offensive Halloween costumes like cowboys, Indians, white trash or “anything involving a sombrero”.

I served on a Grand Jury several years ago, and we caught a cop blatantly testilying on the stand for one case. Sad thing was, there was no need for the lying, the evidence was sufficient.
When the prosecutor was asked hypothetically how they would handle the grand jury indicting the cop for his perjury, the answer was a wake-up call.
We were told that “hypothetically” such an indictment would get a very low priority from the prosecutor’s office and should it happen take more than the mandated 270 days (in this state) to be brought to trial, the indictment would be dropped….
No one was happy with that one… Nor with the number of suspected liars in uniform on the stand…

Too true. We are also witnessing a (not so) subtle programming of children to think that guns are bad. By the time they become adults, they will have no interest in ever owing one.
Consider the other side: Guns are not bad if you belong to a gang…
…so join our gang, kid, and rule your neighborhood. Remember the Golden Rule: “Ice the slimes before they can do unto you.” It’s too easy to make a hood out of a badly-raised kid these days (there are so many of the latter, with so much hateful tribal “thinking” today)…

All too true. Sad, but true. It seems as if the police of today are taught to instantly use full force and maximum intimidation instead of actually assessing the situation. That would be like someone emptying a full clip into a bush because they heard leaves russelling (cause you know, there might have been a deranged Grizzly in there coming for them). Lets not forget the public execution that took place here in DC not too long ago.

I am an experienced military armorer. Depending upon distance, lighting, and other factors I might not be able to distinguish between an AirSoft replica and an actual M16-series service rifle, an M249 light machine gun, an M-14 service rifle and a Kalashnikov. While I was in the Nevada Army National Guard, the Air Soft replicas of the M16A2, M4 carbine, and M249 were used for force-on-force training.
I’d need to handle the weapon–or examine it up close (a few feet) to determine the difference. Yes, at a distance of 18 inches, it is easy to tell the difference. Increase the distance to 18 yards and remove or paint the red muzzle of the Air Soft replica and I will misidentify. Was the street cop in question an armorer experienced with the Kalashnikov rifle? Police work isn’t a gun job even though American police carry guns daily.
Cops do enough really rotten things– but let’s not start making up stuff or we become worse than what we complain about. For example, “people of color” get more tickets for traffic violations than white drivers (if true–the Justice Department is running the numbers and says so, but the Justice Department is a cop shop). Let’s run a scientific test of street cop ability to determine a driver’s race and gender and ethnicity with this test: get a fleet of identical mini-vans with the typical dark tinted windows and have them driven past police at a closing speed of 160 mph at night (or some other realistic street conditions). See how often a statistically significant sample of police officers can correctly identify the driver through dark glass under realistic lighting conditions, while both cop and target car are in motion, at realistic street distances. See if the cops really do have a racial radar and are able to determine driver race.

Yeah, driving through residential streets at 80 miles per hour is normal and reasonable behavior, even when posted speed limits are between 25 and 40 miles per hour. No reason to pull someone over at all…
At distances of more than 12 feet we humans have difficulty detecting deceptive behavior–a reason crime takes place up close and in the dark. At three feet deception is very hard–and there are few valid reasons for adult strangers to reach out and touch another person in public. Are you making unreasonable demands?
