Antarctic sea ice hits second all-time record in a week

Antarctic sea ice has hit its second all-time record maximum this week. The new record is 2.112 million square kilometers above normal. Until the weekend just past, the previous record had been 1.840 million square kilometers above normal, a mark hit on December 20, 2007, as I reported here, and also covered in my book.

Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center, responded to e-mail questions and also spoke by telephone about the new record sea ice growth in the Southern Hemisphere, indicating that, somewhat counter-intuitively, the sea ice growth was specifically due to global warming.

Mann made global warming theory according to environmentalists: more snow and less snow, more sea ice and less sea ice, more rain and less rain, hotter temps and cooler temps, etc. – Must be nice to have a theory that can’t fail :)

    • _Jim says:

quote: Mann made global warming … more snow and less snow, more sea ice and less sea ice, more rain and less rain, hotter temps and cooler temps

This is equivalent in my book, on the part of Serreze (rhymes with) of claiming monopole magnets exist and of course stands in stark contradiction to one of Maxwell’s (more) important Equations (IMO).

This also violates the definition of a ‘function’ (by mapping one x value to multiple y values):

a function is a set of ordered pairs in which no two ordered pairs that have the same first component have different second components. This means that given any x, there is only one y that can be paired with that x.

      .

      • Pooter says:

Yes Jim, but your conclusion stands in stark contrast to Testiclees’ deviate to Fudd’s First Law: If you push something hard enough, it will fall down.

      • At this rate the Earth will be an Ice-Ball in 255 years… swallowed up by Antarctic Ice !!

        Earth = 510 msqkm/2.12 msqkm each year = 255 years..

Oh the Horror !! Where are all the hysterics about this expanding Antarctic Ice!!

        • pateriot says:

They’ve been there before in the 1970s… they’ll be there again when even the stupid can’t swallow their Global Warming bull!

        • jack says:

          It’s OK
We’ll need all that ice to cool off!
It’s going to be so damn hot by then!

        • Miki Bacsi says:

Global warming actually could be true, it happens all the time for a short period (15-20 years) together with global cooling for the same period of time.
It is climate change that makes me laugh, for that requires a significant amount of movements of the continents, or a significant change of the position of the Earth’s imaginary axis. .

The real issue with all these whining about climate change is that it has become the religion of idiots and for that reason they do not listen to facts.

    • Tony says:

I see what you did there. Very droll. I do agree with you. By redefining Man(n) Made Global Warming as…weather, one is certain to win the argument. Not long ago such an obvious fallacy would be laughed at but it’s a fundamentally transformed America in which we live. A much, much, warmer America in which record setting cold and ice can serve as “proof” that the earth is becoming dangerously hot…due to American energy use. As an aside, if anyone ever takes even a rudimentary class on “academic research” it will become immediately obvious that the system is rigged to produce the desired results. Example: The standards to which the “researchers” must adhere depend entirely upon their fields of endeavor. Thus, what would get one professor drummed out of the ranks in, say, engineering would be deemed perfectly acceptable in another field simply because “they all do that” (i.e. “tricks” to achieve desired results).

      • Day one, Statistics 101, Prof says, and I quote:

“Any set of numbers, under enough duress, can produce the results you desire.”

        Truer words…

        • Dave says:

I learned it as “If you torture the numbers long enough, they will admit to anything”. Looks like we have a violation of the Geneva Convention here!

        • Eric says:

statistics: the science of torturing numbers

        • Rick Taylor says:

By duress if you mean false variables. The truth doesn’t require false variables. Don’t throw out the truth with the lies. Statistics ultimately reveal the truth.

      • Walter White says:

“due to American energy use.” Your true goal is made perfectly clear here. The entire enviro-fascism movement is truly for one purpose and one alone; Stop American and Western European exceptionalism. Well Tony, I have news for you, We ARE exceptional. The men of the east made great strides in math and science, but they were unable to put them to a great purpose because their God and backward culture keep them down. Western Europe made the civilized world, and the civilized world will end when this culture does. That’s what this line of thinking is all about, whether you are indoctrinated to a high enough position in the movement to know this remains to be seen.

      • Sarah says:

Fukushima radiation has contributed considerably to this heating – how come no one seems to talk about that much?

    • Yes it’s like flipping a coin and calling heads I win and tails you lose.

    • HR77 says:

Theories that can’t fail are not theories, they are religion.

      • Bill T says:

Yes I agree completely. As a Christian, I have an unshakable faith in Jesus Christ. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and evidence of things unseen. That simultaneously describes the Left and myself perfectly.

        • Phineas Pickle says:

The difference is, the Left is trying to take us all to Hell in a Hand basket.Global Warming is but just one of their attempts at remolding our Country and society as we know it.

        • iseetruth says:

Faith and evidence are opposites and do not equal one another, Bill. Go ahead, look up the meanings in a dictionary.

      • renegade quark says:

These warmists are unbelievable. All phenomena points to Global Warming and they call it svience? Science’s job is to try to disprove theories with empirical observation and the like, NOT to scramble and reach for lame reasons why intuitively contradicting evidence is actually supportive of the favored theory.

The same scientists who now try to explain away yet another conflict between their lucrative AGW project and their predictions ( i.e. the melting icecaps they were predicting a couple of years ago) and doctored computer models.

How much longer will they continue this charade? Moreover, how much longer are we going to let them get away with this scam? Will we be able to wake up to reality before we all freeze to death or perish in a flood and/or drought resulting from runaway global warming.

I really cannot believe how many otherwise intelligent people still buy into this AGW religion preached by Reverend Gore, its limousine pastor.

        • Enemt of Tyranny says:

          renegade quark says:

Its Number two on the New York Times best seller list under “Fiction”

    • BRDG says:

Dems made up the religion of global warming so they can PRETEND to be the savior of the planet. Just as the PRETEND to be the savior of the poor, the blacks, the gays, the unions etc.
It all sounds good from a teleprompter… but the end result is always worse. Poverty has skyrocketed under Obama (from 12 to 16%), as has the dropout rate. The price of gas has more than doubled under Obama as he used a spill and a hurricane to stop all new drilling on federal lands. WHY? To make the outrageously more expensive alternate energies slightly more palatable. Just as Carter did.

    • Mr. Wright says:

The AGW crowd believes that an atmospheric content of 0.0359% Carbon Dioxide has a magical impact on the earth’s climate.
I think the sun and it’s natural cycle and the earth’s rotational axis of 26,000 years (“precession”) have the largest impact on the earth’s climate.
Carbon Dioxide is a trace gas in the make up of the earth’s atmosphere with a level of 0.0359% Carbon Dioxide and has little or no affect on the climate.

    • Francis says:

The Climate on planet Earth has been changing every hour of every day for the last 4 and a half billion years. It appears that if you elect a Progressive Liberal to Office he will with his Progressive Faux science community make Global Climate change a permanent condition of the planet.

These so called scientists have changed their minds so many times and have been caught fibbing and manufacturing their data on more than 10 occasions now. That only the completely restarted 50 point IQ Knuckle Dragging, nose picking, Darwin candidate, grifter, Progressive Liberal would ever stake claim to such a preposterous foolish set of incoherent illogical poppy cock notions! See what our education system has turned into. Fools!

Tell us, who created the Ice Age?

    • gruvy baby I dig this can’t lose global warming gig man!!!!!

    • I say “Stop Global Whining”

  2. Keitho says:

Oh, I thought it was because of the fresh meltwater coming off the Antarctic glaciers being able to freeze more readily than sea water. ( according to the tree house kids over at SkS ).

Now we have this BS story of more ice because of Global Warming ®.

They must think we are all as gullible as that clown in the White House.

    • Lawrence 13 says:

I’ve always maintained that that theory is garbage because if so we would have seen positive (oh sod the jargon) MORE sea ice around the southern coasts of greenland. I’m getting fed up with all the sophistry around global warming.

By the wy Keitho I wouldn’t put down Obama’s words and actions down to gullibility.

      • Keitho says:

No Lawrence, I was wrong about the O Man. He is just using this little bit of nonsense to further his own ends. I am just getting heartily sick of of all of these palookas treating us like chumps.

The one encouraging phenomenon is that me and the missus don’t meet any folk who buy the alarmist claptrap. Young, old and in between all get that the AGW story is nonsense. The only place you will find true believers nowadays is on the blogs or left wing news outlets. Perhaps we are past peak alarmist.

  3. Martin says:

So Serreze believes that warm water from the seas around Antarctica is migrating to the equator leaving in it’s place very cold water – and that’s why we have record amounts of sea ice. I’m left wondering what exactly is heating the water in the seas around Antarctica – it can’t be the sun – it’s dark or almost dark 24 hours a day down there at the moment. Whatever he believes is warming the sea doesn’t seem to affect the land with temperatures down to -72 C.

This guy makes Hank Johnson look like a Nobel science prize contender !

    • Lawrence 13 says:

What happens if the warmer waters meet the missing heat already going via a traffic climate cone diversion; into the oceans

      • Logo4245 says:

The antarctic has an average temperature of -36*. If the earth warms one degree, that means the temp there could rises to an astronomical -35*. No chance of the ice cap melting. Not even during the ‘heat wave’ of 1974 when the temperature hit a record high of 15*. But hey, Al Gore has made billions on his carbon credits while convincing the world to ride a bicycle to work. If he really believed this bunk he would not have seven homes and fly by private jet. Never seen him on a bike………

    • Oh yeah? Just wait until Antarctica tips over:)

    • Dwayne Keith says:

My guess is that the sun, which is responsible for 100% of the warmth on the planet, is somehow responsible for the fluctuations of that warmth.

      • Effectively Anonymous says:

The sun is not accountable for 100% of our heat energy. You missed geothermal (pressure.)

  8. Shanna M says:

On a hunch, I decided to run his gibberish through Google Translate. English -> Japanese -> Lithuanian -> Back to English. The result makes a little bit more sense:

When we talk about water than from 60 degrees south to the south, they call roaring quite strong, the main things that the zonal wind band somewhat stable in Antarctica you, this thing called the 40’s you have around is the Coriolis force when you turn things around to the left. Water at high latitudes, what happens is what happens to heat the water, are the surface, we must determine the type of Ekman drift, the water from the large southern latitudes of the equatorial high respect that is that.

What happens to the water at low southern latitudes sinks and all the circulating loop backflow out there that if you are so that the bottom of the upwelling of cold water, what happens to the same amount of high-latitude mass needed to establish the continuity that you can occur.

This is, in fact, and you can heat the water to the surface in the Arctic is what happens, and that it will not be shipping it. It stays there, it helps to melt more ice in Antarctica but the water carried away.

  9. kirkmyers says:

More AGW rubbish from another government-funded climatology hack. Do charlatans like Serreze realize what fools they look like? Is there any nonsense they won’t spew in their defense of the discredited global warming hypothesis?

Serreze and his fellow scientists-turned-cultists should have been given the boot long ago for scientific malfeasance. The damage they’ve done to science is incalculable. Tarot Card readers have more credibility.

  10. Dmh says:

The colder SST anomalies in Antarctica are not only allowing a continuous expansion of the ice but also affecting (cooling) the ocean at lower latitudes, see, for example, what happened with the (failed) El Nino in 2012 and is happening again this year. The colder part of the ocean in the SH is in the direction of the Weddell Sea, which is increasingly affecting the anomalies of the entire Atlantic, especially after 2011.
The only thing Serreze said that makes sense is that the anomalies from Antarctica are propagating to lower latitudes, he only *changed the sign* of the anomalies!.

It’s simple. The water at the surface is warmer so it gets swept to the equator by the coriolis effect, to be replaced by upwelling colder water. Now you have colder water at the surface so whatever I said in the first sentence doesn’t apply anymore. Never mind.

  12. Chip Bennett says:

If this idiotic babbling were true, wouldn’t Antarctic ice grow even more during the Antarctic warm season? The water would get warmed that much more, creating that much more updwelling and circulation – resulting in that much more ice formation.

  14. Latitude says:

Do you guys realize it’s the exact same explanation they gave when Antarctic ice was decreasing?
    …only in reverse

  15. Richard says:

Perhaps a question to ask them is , if the sea ice was declining in the Antarctic would that mean that global warming was not happening.

  16. Cheshirered says:

When I was a kid we used to say someone using this type of bullshit comment like Serreze has used was ‘blinding us with science’. How counter-intuitively apt. He is of course talking complete balderdash, and he knows it.

  17. Andy DC says:

The Southern Hemisphere ocean water temperatures are not averaging significantly above normal. So where is all the warm water coming from?

    • Hugh K says:

Lower Manhattan gets a reprieve — The Antarctic ice sheet alone contains approximately 61 percent of all fresh water on the earth. Regardless of cause/effect of growing Antarctic sea ice, we all agree that Antarctic sea ice is increasing. Therefore, we no longer need worry about runaway rising sea levels?!?

      • genuine curiosity says:

melting sea ice does not contribute to sea level rising any more than a melting ice cube creates a rise in the liquid in your ice tea. however, melting glaciers, which are frozen lakes on land, do contribute to the rise in sea level as they melt and slide into the sea.

  18. emsnews says:

  22. carlb says:

well if this is true then the ocean level is not rising it is getting lower! doesn’t matter this is political now, real science left the building 20 years ago!

  23. YouGotToBeKiddingMe says:

So what have we learned? We have learned that heat doesn’t melt ice because everyone has been telling us that the earth is getting warmer yet the ice sheet is expanding. If it keeps on getting warmer we will all freeze to death. Now we have the scientific community to distrust along with so many others that we use to hold in high regard.

  24. dave says:

you foolish scientist. I created the Heavens, the Earth and the Seas. I control the weather. Love GOD.

  25. RegularGuy says:

  26. mickrussom says:

The Jurassic period. O2 in atmosphere 130% modern levels. CO2 is 1950ppm, 5-7 times modern levels. Temperature a WHOLE 3 DEGREES C over modern times – Oh noes!! The Jurassic DGW, Dinsaurogenic Global Warming, shows that those Dinosaurs with their Airplanes and Cars and stuff, you know, those Dinosaurs and their DGW destroyed THE WHOLE PLANET!! With their DGW! Look, who wants 26% atmospheric oxygen? More air to breathe? Who wants that! And who wants more CO2 @1950 ppm, you know, to make all those plants and trees convert that CO2 into a higher O2! Who wants that! And we DON’T want the massive biodiversity of the Jurassic, no, we don’t want more plants and animals and trees, no.

Any time period they want to “prove” this they just cherry pick ranges. And they have the perfect example, the Dinosaurs and their horrible DGW, Disnosauric Global Warming, destroyed the Jurassic – wait, no , it didn’t, it was the best time for life on earth with 1950 ppm CO2!

The Cult of the Church of Climatology must spin the massive icepack as AGW. They will find a way.

  31. Steve Sunde says:

This is article provides another great example of why the global warming movement is a religion (or cult if you prefer), and not science-based at all. In the article Mr. Serreze seemingly has an answer for everything–after the fact. However, his “science” is unable to accurately forecast future developments. Neither are his theories amenable to scientific testing for reliability. The theory does not hold up to scrutiny and yet adherents blindly believe and chastise non-believers–also scornfully referred to as “deniers.” Oh, my! By definition, man-made ‘global warming’ and ‘climate change’ are faith-based religions.

What happened to the scientific process? Are they not supposed to be proving their theory correct by being unable to prove it wrong? Isn’t this supposed to keep them from setting up tests and statistics that inaccurately “prove” that the theory is correct? Isn’t this process to keep them honest? It seems to me that they are to busy trying to prove their own theories correct they lost track of the process and how it works to keep them honest. They should know that we can see through it. How many times do they need to be proven wrong for them to admit they are wrong!!!
