1988 Climate Disruption

On June 24, 1988 – after sabotaging the air conditioning, James Hansen told Congress:

Global Warming Has Begun, Expert Tells Senate
New York Times Published: June 24, 1988

Dr. James E. Hansen of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration told a Congressional committee that it was 99 percent certain that the warming trend was not a natural variation but was caused by a buildup of carbon dioxide and other artificial gases in the atmosphere.

June 24, 1988 was a hot day in DC during the hottest summer of the past 30 years in the US. But something strange was going on with the weather. Temperatures just a few miles away were quite cool. Beltsville, MD was 95 degrees that day, but Laurel (a short bike ride away) was only 82 degrees. And the following day, Beltsville was only 79 degrees.

One would expect that sabotaging the air conditioning of a Senate hearing room would be a criminal offense. Also one would expect that making exaggerated claims under oath using fabricated data would not just be a crime against science but also, due to the success, a financial crime of fraud of obtaining monies under fraudulent statements. But then when do the members of the government actually obey the laws it writes for everyone else?

    • The number zero (0) is a firm quantitative upper limit on the probably that politicians and puppet scientists will successfully hide the force in cores of heavy atoms, some planets, ordinary stars and galaxies that:

      1. Generates food, fuel and the energy to sustain life, and
      2. Assume a position God occupied in society before 1945.

Politicians and puppet scientists are trapped, like rats on a sinking ship, refusing to publicly discuss any of the precise experimental measurements that expose sixty-nine years (2014 – 1945 = 69 yrs) of fraudulent government science after WWII ended.

All James Hansen did that day was add drama to his presentation by showing the heat wave that Washington was suffering outside, inside. He did this by turning off the artificial source of cooling, the AC. It was a touch of theatrics used by presidents, congress, candidates, etc, etc, throughout history as a way of making a point. Hansen had what he felt was an urgent point to make to congress. Now the climate deniers have their shorts in a wad over it.

It’s often called a photo-op and it was a rather simple one.

Some photo-ops are elaborately staged and while James Hansen’s was simple, other’s have been far more elaborate. Everyone must remember this one:
    (QUOTE)
    LINCOLN
Friday, May 2, 2003 Posted: 7:47 AM EDT (1147 GMT)
“President Bush makes a tailhook landing on the USS Abraham Lincoln.
    SPECIAL REPORT
ABOARD USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CNN) — President Bush made a landing aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln Thursday, arriving in the co-pilot’s seat of a Navy S-3B Viking after making two fly-bys of the carrier.

It was the first time a sitting president has arrived on the deck of an aircraft carrier by plane. The jet made what is known as a “tailhook” landing, with the plane, traveling about 150 mph, hooking onto the last of four steel wires across the flight deck and coming to a complete stop in less than 400 feet.

The exterior of the four-seat Navy S-3B Viking was marked with “Navy 1” in the back and “George W. Bush Commander-in-Chief” just below the cockpit window. On the plane’s tail was the insignia of the squadron, the “Blue Wolves.”

Moments after the landing, the president, wearing a green flight suit and holding a white helmet, got off the plane, saluted those on the flight deck and shook hands with them. Above him, the tower was adorned with a big sign that read, “Mission Accomplished.”

Bush said he did take a turn at piloting the craft.

“Yes, I flew it. Yeah, of course, I liked it,” said Bush, who was an F-102 fighter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard after graduating from Yale University in 1968.

“Great job,” said Bush, a wide smile stretched across his face as he posed for photographs with crew members who gathered to get their pictures with the president. He draped his arms around some, slapped the backs of others and shook hands with many.

To others, the president said, “Thank you,” and ” ‘preciate it.”

At one point, he looked up to the observation deck and held up both arms to the roar of hundreds of sailors who had crowded the area.

The landing came just hours before Bush is to tell the nation that major combat operations in Iraq have ended. The speech will be delivered from the carrier’s flight deck at 9 p.m. EDT. (end Quote)

Everyone knew (except Bush loyalists) that this was phony-baloney. Also a lie. Major combat operations were years from over. But so this ruse was elaborately staged to make Americans think we had accomplished something like maybe the “MISSION”.

    • R. Shearer says:

“Theatrics”, staged, artificial, exaggerated…seems to be an apt description of CAGW.

    • Robert Austin says:

The public expects scientists to be dispassionate and honest in communicating with their patrons, namely the taxpayers that fund them. We expect theatrics and truth bending from politicians but not from scientists. Do you condone scientists stooping to the level of politicians? Your use of the pejorative “deniers” is part and parcel of your support of dishonourable behavior in the promotion CAGW’ism.

    • cardo says:

Thanks for the revisionist history lesson. You seem to be confused. Hansen lied in 1988 so it is OK that Hillary/Kerry/ Bush lied in 2002. The “mission” was the aircraft carrier’s cruise. The cruise was accomplished in a spectacular way. You are a genius. Keep up the agitprop. Do you get paid for this nonsense (useful idiot) or are you a volunteer? You obviously are a traitor. Did you learn history from Howard Zinn and his text books?
It really is difficult for a democratic republic to function with cluless fools like you.
Do you live and vote in NYC, CA or Detroit?

      • pesce9991 says:

Hansen reported the truth about his research. There is no evidence that he lied. That is just your opinion minus evidence.

Now let’s not conflate who ‘lied’ in 2002. The presenters and producers of the phony intel that got us into the Iraq war were Cheney first and foremost then Bush, Rumsfeld, Powell, Rice, Feith, a few names I can’t recall at the moment. Then there were those who this bs intel was given to who should have been more skeptical. Powell delivered it even though he knew it was doctored horse hockey much to his discredit and his chances of becoming the first black president for the Republicans. (it was an early indication of the beginning of the destruction of the Republican party which is in full swing right now.

I knew there were still a few of you around who still think that “Major Combat Operations IN Iraq” meant “on the boat”. har-de-har!

        • geran says:

Fish, you continue to rewrite history. Bush DID actually fly the jet at one time during the flight, but he never claimed he “landed” it. Bush was never trained for carrier landings.

Nice try, but “FAIL” is becoming too synonymous with “Fish”.

        • cardo says:

pesce : Go back, watch Hillary say why the US must unseat saddam. That was years after Hansen lied about global warming.
Bring some new info. You are an agiprop usefull idiot.
You and your progressive lemmings have made a mockery of truth, logic, government, law, discourse, everything.
Do you live in CA, Chicago,Washington D.C. or NYC?
          Fess up you commie dolt.
Wait , I forgot about San Fran And Madison.
Only an idiot dupped by the Howard Zinn progressives could be so hostile to the country that raised you in the peaceful abundance that you hate so much.
Stop hating on Bush so much and see how evil totalitarinsim is, Stalin, Hitler,Saddam (your man) and who knows what charismatic leader you’ll slobber over next.

        • Jl says:

By “phony intel”, do mean the intel that all the top Dems saw and agreed with, as did many other nations? And what was phony about it?

      pesce,

If you want to be taken seriously you should read the blog before making statements that have already been refuted. Consider this post

      https://stevengoddard.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/1998changesannotated.gif?w=500&h=355

from earlier today. It shows that even in 1999 Hansen couldn’t have believed that there was a long term warming trend because NASA’s own data didn’t show one. Only after that time did NASA start cooling the pre 1979 temperatures & warming those after that time via questionable data manipulations in multiple stages to get the data that frightens you now. See especially the blink graphic at the end.

Great list. I was laughing so hard I maybe missed some.

Did you include the “first President to get 11-12 stitches because he couldn’t play basketball? How about the first President to falsely accuse a policeman of racism, and then had to invite him to the White House for a “beer summit”?

  5. Steve Case says:

I was a staged event, and the staging and theatrics haven’t abated for over 25 years

  6. James the Elder says:

Hansen could not have touched the thermostat without assistance from some weasel politician’s aid, or aide.

  7. Beale says:

Did the committee members present know that the AC had been turned off? If they did, it’s inexplicable that they didn’t demand that it be turned on. Why should they suffer to let Hansen male his point?

    • Beale says:

“… make his point”, of course. Sorry.

      • James the Elder says:

Would you want to be the first one to say “Sure is hot in here”? Especially if you were a Republican. Never ending propaganda on that little blurb.

        • Beale says:

Why not? Because I wouldn’t want to admit that it can get hot in Washington in summer? Of course it can. When was it otherwise?

  8. rah says:

First president to throw a baseball like a little girl.

  9. rah says:

First president to correctly be called liar by a SCOTU justice during a Sate of the Union address.
