It indicates that the current ice coverage is at 2.4% and that this is expected to increase to 6.6% over the next five days. (The dark blue area is where there is less than 10% coverage and the white area has no measurable ice.) Is this significantly different from the average for the past years?

What a total bunch of horse hocky. You wanna know what the real problem is? Ask any retired or active airline pilot with long service and he/she will tell you. Fact is aircraft have become so automated that modern airline pilots lack “stick time’. They are hardly ever actually flying their aircraft. So when something happens that throws the aircraft outside the parameters the automatic systems are programed for the pilots are not prepared to do the recovery themselves.
I have a friend that was command pilot on C-141s part time and his full time job for his airline became aircraft recovery. Going to places, often third world countries, where an airliner had broken down and bringing it back out. He has been preaching on the dangers of the lack of stick time for years now. Captain Al Haynes and his crew, together with flight instructor Dennis Fitch come to mind. They managed to land a heavily damaged DC-10 of United Airlines flight 232 in Sioux City on July 19, 1989. After an engine explosion and the loss of all hydraulic controls, they still found a way to crash-land it, saving 185 of the 296 people on board.
This could never have happened without the experience and resourcefulness of the crew.

Hong Kong Kai Tac International airport was a place where they used to send the pilots that can fly. They closed in down in 1998 but in the years it was in operation it’s cross winds coming off the bay with the approach right over the city provided many a memorable landing.

I regret I only made it to Hong Kong several years after they closed Kai Tac. I’ve never experienced the “checkerboard turn”. I think I would have enjoyed the skill and the thrill.

While driving between venues last night, must have been a little after 11:00 PM, we noticed the light rain and drizzle start intermixing with some sort of light, wispy, seemingly paper thin tiny shreds of what appeared to be some sort of ice-like substance. I was told it was something commonly referred to as “snow”.

Personally I think that DC should be quarantined. It used to be the District of Columbia inside the loop was considered 26 sq. miles surrounded by reality. But obviously the delusion has metastasized to other places.
It covers the eastern 2/3rds of MD, plus a loop that descends to Fredericksburg in VA. Cauterize that portion of the country, and 3/4 of the debt disappears.
