Sinking The TOBS Excuse

GISSUS19992014

One of the main excuses used for this data tampering is time of observation bias, which is based on the idea that people operating thermometers used to be complete morons, and would reset their min/max thermometers only once per day near the afternoon high. The theory says this caused high temperatures to be double counted on successive days.

That is easy enough to test, by  using only stations which USHCN believes did not reset their thermometers during afternoon in the record hot month of July, 1936. These stations should be biased cold in the 1930’s rather than biased warm.

Those thermometers show exactly the same pattern as the set of all stations. There has been no warming in the US for nearly a century, and the 1930’s were warmer than the 1990’s

No matter how they try to hide or deny their data tampering, it isn’t legitimate. 100% of reported warming since 1990 is due to fake data.

Very nice! I can’t wait for the response from the minor league team. 😉

  2. What does “measured adjusted temperatures” mean? Sound like an oxymoron.

  3. scott allen says:

NOAA and everyone involved in collections of temperatures for the last 10-15 years has know about the TOB in the collections and have altered the time of collections. So why does NOAA still add degrees of temperature to their data sets to account for TOB

    http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/ushcn/ushcn.html#QUAL

The last chart says it all showing the, DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RAW AND FINAL USHCN DATA SETS. Which matches the increase in global warming.

  4. scott allen says:

I forgot NOAA must be getting worse at reading temperatures because they have to adjust more as the equipment gets newer, in the 20’s’and 30’s the didn’t add much to the adjustment numbers it isn’t till the 80’s and 90’s that they are having to increase the adjustment by almost .6 degrees.

I looked at the TOBS question to satisfy my own curiosity. This is what I found:

    • Gail Combs says:

As I said below the accuracy was not 1-2 degrees F but 0.5 F per analysis done in 1918 by Willis Isbister Milham. The best results with the most accurate equipment available was 0.1 F.

Also there were 200 professionally run stations that took readings more often than once a day. These stations recorded a continuous thermograph record with a Richard Freres thermograph in addition to the twice daily recordings. Therefore there are at least 200 records available that need no adjustment and against which the adjustments can be compared.

      • GaryW says:

        Gail,
Yes, I have a copy of Milham’s paper. It is really great at providing a historic perspective on meteorology and instrumentation. However, the 0.5 degrees Farhenheit accuracy value shows up only once and while referring to the use of and appropriate shelter: “It has been found as a result of many experiments that the indication of the thermometer in such as shelter usually gives the real air temperature correct to within half a degree.” The shelter he was discussing was similar to a Stevenson Screen.

Were Milham’s statement true, then the sometimes multiple degree differences between electronic MMTS and the old min/max LIG systems would indicate the new systems are quite inaccurate. However, the correct perspective is simply that it is difficult to get consistent and accurate air temperature readings and claiming +/- 0.5 degree F accuracy was a bit too optimistic.

It would be nice if you could let us amateurs know how to get a copies of those 200 thermograph based records. I sure have not even heard that such a database was available.

        Gary

  8. Bloke down the pub says:

If Tobs was an issue, wouldn’t it show up as record temps being repeated the next day?

    • Gail Combs says:

TOBS is a complete fallacy. As long as the reading is done at the same time each day you are getting the readings for a 24 hour time period. The same type of reasoning can be applied to taking the reading first thing in the morning. You will double count an extreme low for two days. Actually reading in the morning is more likely to cause a double count error since the lowest temperature occurs after sunrise.

Also no one is going to stop what he is doing in the middle of the afternoon to read a thermometer. It is going to be read right before or right after supper. Second it is waiting too long after the heat of the day that gives false readings.

      1892 Instruction Manual for Observers

      Page 18:

When a maximum thermometer is not read for several hours after the highest temperature has occurred and the air in the meantime has cooled down 15 or 20, the highest temperature indicated by the top of the detached thread of mercury may be too low by half a degree from the contraction of the thread.

When the fall of temperature from the highest point is very slow a little of the mercury may pass down before the thread breaks, especially when there is no wind to cause a slight jarring of the instrument….

So the error is likely to be reading too low and not reading too high.

Meteorology: A Text-book on the Weather, the Causes of Its Changes, and Weather Forecasting By Willis Isbister Milham 1918

The observations of temperature taken at a regular station are the real air temperature at 8am and 8pm, the highest and lowest temperatures of the preceding 12 hours, and a continuous thermograph record…. (Richard Freres thermograph) ….these instruments are located in a thermometer shelter which is ordinarily placed 6 to 10 feet above the roof of some high building in the city. At a Cooperative station the highest and lowest temperatures during a day are determined, and also the reading of the maximum thermometer just after it has been set. The purpose of taking this observation is to make sure that the maximum thermometer has been set and also to give the real air temperature at the time of observation.

Therefore the data should be available to determine if the temperature has started to fall from the high of the day and by how much.

There are also other cross checks on the temperature data. Plants: The Köppen Climate Classification

Check out the bottom graph which shows plant movement by decade.

      http://www.sturmsoft.com/climate/suckling_mitchell_2000_fig2_3.gif

Study finds stream temperatures don’t parallel warming climate trend

… the bottom line is that recent trends in overall stream temperature do not parallel climate-related trends.”

The researchers caution that the findings don’t mean that climate change will not have an impact on stream temperature, which is a fundamental driver of ecosystem processes in streams. However, the relationship between air temperatures and stream temperatures may be more complex than previously realized and require additional monitoring.

Alternatively, there may be a time lag between air temperature and stream temperature, they say….

Coauthor Roy Haggerty, a professor in OSU’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, said warming temperatures can create more rapid or earlier snowmelt and affect stream temperatures in some locations. Another explanation for the lack of warming in many streams can be a time lag that can occur between precipitation entering underground aquifers and entering the stream.

“Groundwater can influence stream temperatures as well as streamflow and in some cases, it can take many years for that groundwater to make it to the stream,” noted Haggerty, the Hollis M. Dole Professor of Environmental Geology at OSU.

“This and the other physics processes of a stream need to be considered when analyzing its heat budget – from the geology and stream bed, to the amount of shading in the riparian zone.”…

Gee, guys maybe the stream temperatures do not match the GISS adjusted temperatures because the adjustments are bogus!

  9. Morgan Tourbier says:

    http://rankexploits.com/musings/2010/a-cooling-bias-due-to-mmts/

Found this. Here Zeke and Mosher have a problem.

The older CRS sensors show a higher Max temp. compared to the newer MMTS sensors and they blame TOBS…

When the Stewenson Sceen is new then all is fine, but it will sone have some dirt and dust on it and eventually some paint will fall off. Anyone with knowledge in Science knows that this will influence the temperature inside the Screen, well except Zeke and Mosher. So what do they do? They of course increase the readings from the MMTS sensors so that they are in line with the CRS sensors. They correction is not small 0,5 degree C. As a former board member of the Royal Institute Of Technology here is Stockholm I feel ashame about guys like Mosher and Zeke. At least they should admit that this is a problem, but they do not.

Are they really that simple minded?

    • Gail Combs says:

Zeke and Mosher are paid propagandists. Unfortunately they still have A.W. bamboozled.

      • Bob Greene says:

Absolutely right, Gail. If I’d have tried crap like that at the Cow College in Raleigh 40 years ago, they would have suggested I find something more suited to my very limited talents. I’m willing to bet now that the believers have taken over.

        • Gail Combs says:

I just found out that the “Cow College” I went to has a prof who is one of the ones on the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC). That committee came up with the recommendation that America Should Adopt a ‘Plant-Based’ Diet. It recommends taxes on dessert, trained obesity “interventionists” at schools and worksites, and electronic monitoring of how long Americans sit in front of the television or computer. The new Food Safety Modernization Act and Obummercare will be used as the weapons to ‘transform’ American dietary habits. to a more sustainable pattern of eating.

This load of Bovine Feces is straight out of the mouth of Maurice Strong:

In 1992, As Chairman Strong told the UN conference at Kyoto…

“It is clear that current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class, involving high meat intake, consumption of large amounts of frozen and convenience foods, use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and work place air conditioning, and suburban housing are not sustainable.”

The same propaganda was repeated by WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy…

“climate change negotiations are not just about the global environment but global economics as well — the way that technology, costs and growth are to be distributed and shared… Can we balance the need for a sustainable planet with the need to provide billions with decent living standards? Can we do that without questioning radically the Western way of life? “

It is being ‘presented as a health issue by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee as the excuse to ram radical changes down the throats of Americans.
However it has nothing to do with health. There is certainly a lot of information in the scientific literature that shows humans need meat especially early in life if the brain is to develop fully. For example: Role of red meat in the diet for children and adolescents

The US governments concern for the health of Americans does not play given the FDA has routinely over looked “…significant departures from good clinical practice, such as underreporting of adverse events, violations of protocol, violations of recruitment guidelines, and various forms of scientific misconduct…. or submission of false information… The FDA does not typically notify journals …nor make any announcement intended to alert the public about the research misconduct that it finds. The documents the agency discloses [FOIA] tend to be heavily redacted. As a result, it is usually very difficult, or even impossible, to determine which published clinical trials are implicated by the FDA’s allegations of research misconduct.”Research Misconduct Identified by the US Food and Drug Administration

In an article for Slate, study author Charles Seife said the FDA repeatedly hides evidence of fraud from both the public and trusted scientific advisers. In at least one case, falsified data in a trial comparing chemotherapies led to a patient’s death.

Nor does concern for public health play given the USDA recent conduct. The Government Accountability Project – “Shielding the Giant, USDA’s ‘Don’t Look, Don’t Know’ Policy” report shows the USDA routinely hid the fact they KNEW Con-agra was shipping E. coli O157:H7 laced meats. It wasn’t until John Munsell forced the issue that the extent of the problem was finally disclosed to the public. Unfortunately the damage was already done to the reputation of farmers and the Ag Cartel dominated USDA/FDA and World Trade Organization got their much wanted Food Safety Modernization Act past Congress.

So why are Americans suddenly about to be forced into a change in eating habits?
A year ago the chair of DGAC told us why and it has NOTHING to do with health and everything to do with Agenda 21 aka Sustainability. She said:

“After 30 years of waiting, the fact that this committee is addressing sustainability issues brings me a lot of pleasure,” she began. Clancy went on to advocate that Americans should become vegetarians in order to achieve sustainability in the face of “climate change.”

That statement certainly sounds like the DGAC is more concerned with Sustainability than with the health of Americans. The Chair goes on to say.

“What pattern of eating best contributes to food security and the sustainability of land air and water?” Clancy asked. “The simple answer is a plant-based diet.”…
Clancy said plant-based diets lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and have a “smaller ecological impact” on “drought, climate change, soil erosion, pesticides and antibiotics in water supplies.”

“In terms of keeping a broader idea of food security in your minds it would be perilous, I would think, for this committee or anybody else to not be taking climate change into account in any of the deliberations about sustainability,” she said.

Clancy said beef production is the “greatest concern.”

Meat production is harmful to the environment because of manure runoff and “methane production by cattle,” she said, which has “a much stronger effect on climate change than carbon dioxide does per unit of methane.”…..
          http://weaselzippers.us/179187-meet-the-radicals-creating-the-new-federal-dietary-guidelines/

So beef production, not the health of Americans are the ‘greatest concern’ Gee thanks for telling us that up front.

The report is open for public comment for 45 days, and will be used as the basis by the government agencies to develop the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The guidelines are used as the basis for government food assistance programs, nutrition education efforts, and for making “decisions about national health objectives.

DGAC proposed a variety of solutions to address obesity, and its promotion of what it calls the “culture of health.”

DGAC called for diet and weight management interventions by “trained interventionists” in healthcare settings, community locations, and worksites.

“Government at local, state, and national levels, the health care system, schools, worksites, community organizations, businesses, and the food industry all have critical roles in developing creative and effective solutions,”

…policy interventions to “reduce unhealthy options,” limit access to high calorie foods in public buildings, “limit the exposure” of advertisements for junk food, a soda tax, and taxing high sugar and salt items and dessert.

“Align nutritional and agricultural policies with Dietary Guidelines recommendations and make broad policy changes to transform the food system so as to promote population health, including the use of economic and taxing policies to encourage the production and consumption of healthy foods and to reduce unhealthy foods,”

The amount of sedentary time Americans spend in front of computers and TV sets is also a concern to the federal panel…

They recommended “coaching or counseling sessions,” “peer-based social support,” and “electronic tracking and monitoring of the use of screen-based technologies” as a way to limit screen time….

“The major findings regarding sustainable diets were that a diet higher in plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, and lower in calories and animal-based foods is more health promoting and is associated with less environmental impact than is the current U.S. diet,”

          http://freebeacon.com/issues/feds-america-should-adopt-plant-based-diet/

On top of that is this article: Hospitals to begin monitoring your credit card purchases to flag ‘unhealthy’ habits

What you buy at the grocery store, where you live, and even your membership status at the local gym are all subject to a new data collection scheme by the American medical system. Reports indicate that hospitals and doctors’ offices all across the country are now collecting this and other personal information in order to target individuals deemed to have “unhealthy” lifestyle habits that put them at high risk of disease.

Bloomberg reports that hospital systems in both North and South Carolina as well as Pennsylvania have already begun tracking people’s food-purchasing habits by spying on them through public records and credit card transactions. Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS), which operates some 900 care centers throughout the Carolinas, has teamed up with a data-mining company to compile and track this information for the later purpose of calling “high-risk” folks and urging them to make a change.

“What we are looking to find are people before they end up in trouble,” stated Michael Dulin, chief clinical officer for analytics and outcomes at CHS, to Bloomberg. “The idea is to use big data and predictive models to think about population health and drill down to the individual levels to find someone running into trouble that we can reach out to and try to help out.”….

          WTF!!! Is this the USA?

And just to give you the warm fuzzies, Why Is the USDA Buying Submachine Guns with 30-Round Magazines? Are those bullets for our livestock or for us farmers.

I’m sure those folks live the simple life they wish on the rest of us. Until I was 10 I lived in a house that had no insulation and no heat on the second floor. It doesn’t get that cold in Eastern NC but I remember snow blowing through the windows and not melting on the bedcovers a couple times. We had indoor plumbing which most of my relatives didn’t. I’ve lived the low-carbon, sustainable lifestyle and could do it again. But like the generation before me, I prefer those unsustainable creature comforts.
