OT. Did a run up to Oxford, MI and back Wednesday. I was rather stunned by the difference that I noticed while driving along I-69 E. The budding and leafing of their deciduous foliage is more than a week and possibly 10 days behind what it is here in Central Indiana. That is a straight line distance of only 232 mi. NE from my terminal in Anderson, IN to my delivery point in Oxford, MI. The last two winters have been pretty tough up there and it shows.

I know too much about computers to be comfortable with such automation. I might not be averse to warning systems that might alert the driver though. I would be curious how this deals with slower moving traffic … if it tries to pass, or just goes more slowly. Also if there is a driver ahead trying to change lanes and you have a clear view, I doubt if this system would ever bother to flash headlights.

I could possibly see unmanned trucks someday on certain limited access roads, but think it’s a very long way off for normal driving conditions. Seems to me it would be one heck of a lot easier to eliminate the engineer on a train, but they sure haven’t done that yet for general service now have they? When they do, then I’ll start thinking that possibly the days of the over road truck driving are limited.
BTW one has to drive over a gravel road to get to where I delivered Wed.

Computer driven road trains are already in our neck of the woods. Every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, a 4 trailer road train takes iron ore on the hilly and bendy road 300 km to the Wyndham Port. The computer does it all except hold the steering wheel. The amount of gear changes needed are too much for a driver, and too tough if they get it wrong. So far, so good.
Iron ore trains in the Pilbara are now driven by operators in Perth, over 1500 km away, so too is much of the machinery they use.
My Freightliner has an automatic in it also. Many trucks on the road do these days. They aren’t the hydrostatic type like in an automobile. They are like a manual transmission that is actuated by air pressure and controlled by a computer.
But I do the braking or accelerating, steering, signaling, and what would be most difficult for a computer, ANTICIPATE! Situational Awareness is the first key to safe driving and that is what a computerized vehicle is going to have to be able to master and it’s going to have to use information it senses a half mile ahead of it at highway speeds.

It is worth looking up Bosch Fawstin and visiting his website. His history as a boy growing up in a NYC Muslim family is eye opening. The men in his family were brutal not only to the women but also to the children. The religion as his family practiced it, was a religion of HATE and contempt for those who are weaker.

I remember him writting that a family member casually kicked his wife down the stairs while talking to the other men and no one even hesitated in speach or notices. The only “Picture” that I saw in Kuwait was a depiction of a dream (circa 1985) which prophesied the destruction of Kuwait. It was permitted because it was a “Prophecy”.
