Climate Realists In 1937

“Going to Nebraska to hunt elephants this summer?” New Yorkers of the distant future may ask one another, if the climate returns to the average of the last 500 million years. Nebraska once looked like this.

1937 … before people became politically correct and claimed to be so sure of the climate … then they were more honest and I like their response when describing future climate possibilities:

No one can be sure, but we needn’t worry …

Now, everyone worries about everything and demands abound for somebody to do something to take care of them because something bad might happen … this country of over-educated two year olds throwing their petty temper tantrums.

It would be kinda nice to be AGWer. That would mean I would have so few real problems and concerns about the state of the world, I would be free to worry about the weather.

    • Jason Calley says:

Hey gofer! “It would be kinda nice to be AGWer. ”

No! Stay away from the dark side of the force!

The true believers I know who support CAGW are miserable about it. They really, truly believe that life as we know it is doomed. We are already past the tipping point and there are thousands of species going extinct RIGHT NOW. The islands of the Pacific are being swallowed by the sea RIGHT NOW. Millions — billions! — of people alive today will die a catastrophic death any day now!

They really believe that stuff — in spite of the facts.

My theory (OK, maybe not even a theory, just my opinion) is that a large number of such people have some other major source of anger and despair in their life. Embracing CAGW gives them a plausible reason for feeling so bad, a reason that justifies their pain but one that doesn’t require that they take an honest look at their lives and actually do something to fix it. This is like the alcoholic who has lost his last three jobs from being drunk, but insists that the REAL cause is that his bosses were all jerks who just hated him.

  3. Good post. Modern totalitarianism was just learning how to frighten voters with hobgoblins (The Saloon, non-christian foreigners) and rob them good and proper.

  4. Andy DC says:

Modern humanity has created extremely imaginative flimflam schemes to filch money doing nothing productive, like trying to pretend you can predict the unpredictable.

  5. Oliver K. Manuel says:

The mental defects in doubters have already been analyzed:

    • Jason Calley says:

Hey Oliver! After reading the paper you link to, I have had an amazing epiphany! Conspiracies don’t happen, and some humans with magical powers! I was watching some videos of magicians on YouTube, and in the past, I always assumed that there was a group of people (magicians) who had closely held techniques and secret knowledge which allowed them to manipulate human perception. The end result was that by withholding these secrets they could appear to do things that are physically impossible. Now I know that such secret groups of conspirators do not exist. Magicians really DO saw women in half and then recombine them! Magicians really DO levitate! The only alternative is belief in a conspiring group of people who pass hidden techniques among themselves and secretly manipulate our understanding of what we experience.

      sarc off 🙂

Not directly related this story, but I read this from Minneapolis Star Tribune Meteorologist Paul Douglas on his blog today. “It’s not reality, it’s a weather model “. Ironic since he is the biggest AGW cheerleader. He was talking about a snowfall forecast. I wish he could understand It’s not reality, it’s a climate model.
