I realize that east of the Sierras is a rain shadow and a different climate region but the nearest climate driver is still the Pacific Ocean.

One of the things I find odd in California are the bike riders who ride next to traffic in the bike lane and look in their rear view mirror waiting until a vehicle passes at which time they swerve quickly a few inches into the car lane. Then they go back into the bike lane and start looking into their rear view mirror again.
Not kidding. California, it’s a kick!! Why doesn’t all of America move here and be part of the fun!
Amino – are these cyclists or motorcyclists? If the later it is odd, but some cyclists do this to get a pull from the passing vehicle’s slipstream, which can be significant.
As an observer,could it be that parts of the coast are sinking,while others are rising,the movement of the “plates” will not be uniform,or is it a case of California Dreaming[coke induced]
