Interesting study that shows when sea temperatures rise atmosphere temperatures tend to rise also. Now they realize what others have been saying. The strength of hurricanes is determined by the difference between sea surface temperatures and air temperature. If both warm at the same time the storm will stay the same or if air temperatures warm faster then storm intensities will decrease. In other words. a warmer world has milder climate as is seen in prehistoric / geologic records. At WUWT there was a report recently claiming the same about hurricanes in the Atlantic At least I think I read it there.

Pacific Ocean heating up? What have these people been smoking?

With the amount of time required to do this type of research this group can be forgiven because they are using standard climatologist practices of looking at a short term trend and claiming significance. If you look at the ENSO trends you will find both warming and cooling involved. Being climatologists the ignored the cooling periods to make a point.
Proper observation will show the Pacific ocean has been cooling over the long period of 5 thousand or more years, just like the rest of the globe.
