All Time Record Cold In Greenland This Week?

Hansen and the Met Office have been talking a lot about the remarkable heat in Greenland, which is forecast to challenge its all-time coldest temperature this week of minus 87F.

It would appear that the excess heat in the North Atlantic is manifesting itself as record cold, under the blanket of heat-trapping CO2.

  1. Hi Steven!

    Heres the minute-for-minute updates:
    http://www.summitcamp.org/status/weather/index?period=day

These data are in Celsius and i believe the all time Greenland record low is -62.8C . In around10-15 hours from now we know if this record was broken.
The Summit series was started around 1987.

  2. Argh, the prognosis for monday is even lower, – 66 C… on wunderground.

  3. Just checked at DMI, the Summit coldest is near -63C.

  4. glacierman says:

This record cold is easily explained by all the coldwarm that was burped to the south causing record snowfall in the mid-latitudes as record warmcold air moved to the north diplacing it. Plus all that extra heat stored in the atmosphere caused increase evaporation which cause rapid cooling leading to unprecedented coldwarm. Anyway, it is clearly explained by AGW theory and nothing unusual at all. Cold is weather (explained by a warming planet), but warm is climate (explained by SUVs).

    • Lance says:

You forgot the cold pacific and hot water around Australia causing record flood/drought and record flood/drought in the Amazon and…..

      ok.. enough…

frankly, its a stupid cold, I don’t care, i’ll take a warm chinook anytime thanks…

  5. A comment hear at Real science mentioned that the missing ice around Hudson bay- greenland is hardly a problem for the coming summer ice which is true.

Here at left we have the missing ice area in the circle, and the rest of the Arctic, that is the Arctic ocean itself, is up to normal in ice extend. On the right is temperature anomalies for entire 2010 explaining well why we have this missing Hudson bay ice:

    • glacierman says:

See -60-degrees completely explains a lack of ice, for those that buy AGW theory! Oh, and an anomoly map is a temp map when the team says it is.

    • Scott says:

So I swear I read somewhere a quote by Hansen indicating that the warm anomaly by Hudson Bay was caused by the lack of ice there. Is there any evidence of that being true? Isn’t it just as likely the other way around?

      -Scott

      • Anything is possible says:

“Isn’t it just as likely the other way around?”

        No.

It’s far more likely to be the other way around.

The blocking high over the North West Atlantic which bought record low December temperatures to NW Europe also bought unsettled, anomalously warm weather to Eastern Canada, and inhibited ice formation.

This is wholly falsifiable because the pattern has now broken down. Mild temperatures have returned to NW Europe, and conditions in Eastern Canada are forecast to return to seasonal norms, which would cause rapid ice formation over the next couple of weeks.

If it plays out thus, it will once again demonstrate that Hansen was talking out of his nether regions……

      • Scott says:

Looks like I was sort of wrong, here’s the quote:

“The extreme warmth in Northeast Canada is undoubtedly related to the fact that Hudson Bay was practically ice free. In the past, including the GISS base period 1951-1980, Hudson Bay was largely ice-covered in November,”

Available at this site (and others):

        http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/jan2011/2011-01-12-02.html

So I don’t know how to take the term “related”. It seems like they indicate that warmth is due to lack of ice, but you could argue that “related” is ambiguous and does not imply cause and effect.

        -Scott

  6. Brad says:

    “coldwarm”. Now that’s funny.

    • glacierman says:

Oh, I forgot to add that the new null hypothesis requires skeptics/deniers to prove to the team that the record coldwarm is not being caused by Mannkind.

Keep in mind that the team has redefined what peer-review is!

      • Al Gored says:

Seems the only real questions now are whether what evil humans has caused is actually “coldwarm” or “warmcold,” and how much funding will be required to answer that.

  7. PhilJourdan says:

Is the ice in danger of freezing squared?

  8. Anything is possible says:

So I don’t know how to take the term “related”. It seems like they indicate that warmth is due to lack of ice, but you could argue that “related” is ambiguous and does not imply cause and effect.

    -Scott

    _____________________________________________________________

It absolutely IMPLIES cause and effect, even if it doesn’t state it explicitly.

Scott, it has clearly got you wondering whether the warmth is associated with the lack of ice, which is exactly what Hansen WANTS you to think.

He is as good at manipulating the English language as he is at manipulating climate data……..

    • Scott says:

I definitely agree there, because that was my first impression even though I have a spreadsheet with the historical Arctic sea ice that makes me well aware of its conditions (i.e., I’m a fairly well informed person on the matter).

But, I think that “related” was intentionally chosen to implicitly point to a certain cause/effect while being ambiguous. As you point out, crafty use of the English language.

Point is, there’s the quote for you all to see. 🙂

      -Scott

  9. Secret says:

Well unfortunately the theory of “Plus all that extra heat stored in the atmosphere caused increase evaporation which cause rapid cooling leading to unprecedented coldwarm” doesn’t sit too well with observable evidence. That is the Sun-dogs seen by Greenlanders, in which they thought the Sun rose up passed the horizon 2 days earlier than normal.

Sun-dogs can only appear if there is extremely cold upper atmosphere. Cold is caused by the lack of heat/energy. Basic science.

  10. Earl W Ayers II says:

Google “year 2011” and read up on a book from 1845 that told about the cold snap that would
come in the year 2011. it is a 333 year cycle that they knew about in 1845 based on the
movement of the magnetic north poll.
