Romm / McKibben Think That Glass Melts At 114F

World class stupidity on display

“WOW. It’s so hot in Oklahoma that the streetlights are melting,” ThinkProgress declared, noting the temperature topping off at 114 degrees.

“Hey Senator @InhofePress, even your streetlights are saying #ImTooHot http://ow.ly/cHbX4,” the Climate Reality Project tweeted later, linking to the ThinkProgress claim.

“Senator Inhofe, God may be trying to get your attention. Check out this picture http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2012/08/02/630211/in-oklahoma-its-so-hot-the-street-lights-are-melting/ …” added Environmental activist Bill McKibben, highlighted by blogger Tom Nelson.

That tweet was later deleted.

But according to KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City, the street lamps melted because of a dumpster fire in the area the night before. KFOR first posted the streetlamp photo on its Facebook page.

Nobel Prize winner Al Gore thinks that it is millions of degrees under his house, and Biden thinks that (non) President Roosevelt reported the 1929 stock market crash on (non) TV.

    Reblogged this on Climate Ponderings.

    Oh my gawd….this screams for a tee-shirt….

with the first copies sent to McKibben & Romm…

and worn by every skeptic as they present testimony to Congress & UN…

  4. John B., M.D. says:

Let’s see if they spin the cause of the dumpster fire as being due to a combination of hot ambient temps due to AGW plus greenhouse gas methane production from rotting garbage.

  5. And all those penis enlargement pills he has been buying don’t work either, yet the advertisement said scientifically tested!

  6. Dave N says:

It’s one thing to remove a story because they discovered the cause was something different; it’s completely another to post the story in the first place based on the premise of a physical impossibility.

Einstein was right: human stupidity is infinite; with one source being confirmed once again as Think Progress. What an incredibly ironic misnomer.

  9. Joseph Bastardi says:

What do you expect from a guy that has so little knowledge about hurricanes, he thinks Irene was a sign of global warming.

  10. John B., M.D. says:

What’s even more hilarious is that as of now, no comments were made at Think Progress about the physical impossibility of those lights melting at 114 deg F. Idiot lemmings!

    • PaddikJ says:

I finally found a picture of the lights, and the semi-melted lenses looked like medium or high-dens polyethylene, which has a melting point around 260F – that would be a hot day! Popular for decorative applications because it’s naturally milky-translucent & cheap.

I was having trouble with the dumpster fire story since I was picturing “real” street lights – the ones 30′ or so high, have clear lenses, and put out useful levels of light. These decorative types are usually more like 10-12′ high, and a dumpster fire could have easily melted them.

  11. Glass globes would have exploded due to uneven heating. These are HDP globes that melt at 266f. http://www.decralite.com/product_details.php?pid=100 Most decorative street lamps use HDP globes as they are A. shatterproof (mostly) and B.Cheap $36.99 compared to $300.00 for glass.

  12. Scott says:

To be fair, I think those lights were made of plastic. But still, 114 F, LOL! No clue, no clue at all. Anyone that listens to someone making his claim is beyond idiotic.

Bill McNutKibben is needing to take vacation to the nearest funny farm and chill out. All that extreme AGW/CC belief of his has melted his brain.

Yet another candidate for John Brignell’s Compleat List of Things Caused by Global Warming: http://www.numberwatch.co.uk/warmlist.htm

I believe Romm’s assertion from a few years ago that several weeks of 90+ temperatures in Minneapolis caused that bridge collapse is also on the list.

Romm has, or claims to have, a PhD. in Physics. If true, he must have had some sort of incriminating pictures of the dept. chairs and everyone on his thesis committee.

  15. Tony Duncan says:

Yup. Another cool day in OK, and you guys really believe these people are that stupid. the post I read clearly explained that there was a fire. But keep pretending the people you are attacking are idiots, at least it makes you feel good. Something you sorely seem to be in need of

  16. Eric Webb says:

FACT: Glass melts at temperatures anywhere from 1400-1600 degrees Celsius (about 2600-2900 degrees fahrenheit). Even Venus couldn’t melt glass (but it would probably crush it under the weight of atmospheric pressure). These guys are BEYOND full retard.

    • John B., M.D. says:

The Venus atmosphere at the surface could crush a glass sphere filled with gas, but if the glass globe were open at the bottom, then no.
