      YIKES! … nice spring!

      • Gina says:

We got our Spring weather in December. Winter didn’t really come till January, at least here in the LP.

    • Gina says:

Snowfall in Houghton, MI (the nearest data I can find to the location you depict) stands at 156 inches as of the end of February (according to Michigan Tech University). The record since 1890 is 355 inches, in the winter of 1978-79.

This has not been a cold winter for Michigan. November, December, and the first couple weeks of January were unseasonably hot, getting over 50F at some points.

      • Are you completely daft?

      • Glacierman says:

Houghton, MI is 785 miles from this location. What are you trying to prove by bringing that up?
Also, I can assure you it has been cold and snowing in Michigan this year, the UP included. The winter of 78-79 was an extraordinary winter in terms of snow fall (recieving 29.5 feet is not the norm even in the UP). Are you saying if it is not at or near the record that is somehow proof that snowfall levels are trending downward?

      • Glacierman says:

Also, the average snowfall for Houghton, MI is 208 inches. You note that the total through the end of February is 156 inches. It snows into May in the Houghton area, so it seems to be a pretty average year. According to Michigan Tech Data: http://mtukrc.org/met/weather_snow_data.htm
They have recieved 30 inches so far in March, bringing the total to 186 inches (15.5 feet) on the first day of spring. Again, looks like a pretty average, snowing winter in Houghton, MI.

      • Glacierman says:

Oh yea, forgot to add: There is currently 50 inches on the ground in Houghton, MI. In the woods, off any kind of groomed trail or road, snow shoes are a must. What would we do if it were not so darned unseasonably warm?

      • Justa Joe says:

Take all of the winter metrics for Michigan, and I’ll bet that this winter will rank as solidly average. Your recollections are distorted. People only remember the coldest aspects of winter. They don’t remember all the times when it was pretty mild. Every winter can’t be one for the record books.

    • Gina says:

For other parts of the UP:

Escanaba (refers to January records only
      Marquette
St. Ignace (covers fewer years, unfortunately.)

I camped at Twin Lakes several years ago. Good spot to use as base camp for drive to Copper Harbor and fort.

Just found this gem posted by Jeff Master’s in his blog of March 20th, 2013

    http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=2370

“Unusual winter jet stream patterns tied to Arctic sea ice loss”

So they are saying that somebody found a relationship in winter due to the “loss of Arctic Sea ice”.

Which I found interesting since in winter the entire Arctic Sea is always filled with ice. We are missing some ice in the Barents Sea and Greenland Sea, but the Arctic Basin is just chock-full of ice, like it is every year?? Curious….

    • Ben says:

Awesome, Jeff Masters has discovered a new negative feedback. Let’s go for another record and punk the jet stream in 2014.

Like the “scientists” heading the NCDC and GISS, the NRDC is run by a group of global warming activists. Thus, zero credibility.

Spring arrives tomorrow in the North Hemisphere, and many regions in North America and Europe are experiencing winter-like storms and temperatures. It’s too early to tell, but there are indications that the planet may be approaching another period of extended cold — perhaps another Dalton Minimum or Maunder Minimum — or worse. The quiet sun, negative PDO and, in a few more years, transition to a negative AMO could result in a deadly combination of extreme cold. The previous warnings of the threat of “Global warming” will turn out to be wishful thinking.

KIllington got a foot of snow yesterday.

  6. Edward. says:

Listen Steve, it’s bloody cold over here in the North of England – can you send over some MM global warming for us?

    Pretty please!

    March?#!? FFS – it’s colder than January………….brrr
