1981 : global warming alarmist

Published: August 22, 1981

A team of Federal scientists says it has detected an overall warming trend in the earth’s atmosphere extending back to the year 1880. They regard this as evidence of the validity of the ”greenhouse” effect, in which increasing amounts of carbon dioxide cause steady temperature increases.

The seven atmospheric scientists predict a global warming of ”almost unprecedented magnitude” in the next century. It might even be sufficient to melt and dislodge the ice cover of West Antarctica, they say, eventually leading to a worldwide rise of 15 to 20 feet in the sea level. In that case, they say, it would ”flood 25 percent of Louisiana and Florida, 10 percent of New Jersey and many other lowlands throughout the world” within a century or less.

A leading participant in past carbon dioxide studies has been Dr. Stephen H. Schneider of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

  1. Andy Oz says:

    There is a simple explanation:
In 1977 Schneider was taking the drugs du jour – downers – hash, heroin, ludes
In 1981 he was taking the new drug du jour – uppers – cocaine, pcp, lsd

    • squid2112 says:

No, there is an even simpler and more plausible explanation. Dr. Stephen Schneider is in fact a socialist. Just read his BIO and it reeks of an academic socialist. Therefore, he will flop-flop his position on climate view to fit his socialist ideology. He is no scientist, he is an idealog versed in the socialist/communist ideology.

As the say, follow the money!

  3. B.C. says:

It must be nice to be able to wrong 100% of the time and still get a paycheck. At least baseball players have to be relatively “successful” 25% of the time while at bat, in order to keep cashing a paycheck on a regular basis. Imagine if an NFL QB had a pass completion record like the Warmistas have in their alarmist predictions? Oh… wait… The folks in Denver know what that’s like after this past Super Bowl! 🙂

  4. B.C. says:

Dammit! That should read “…to be able to be wrong…”. Where’s an “Edit Comment” button when you need one? 😉

  5. Steve Case says:

What was Dr. John Holdren’s turn around time?

I’m an old duck and I remember the “Global Cooling” scare which morphed into “Nuclear Winter” scare mongering which I swear was still running in the press in the early ’90s right along side “Global Warming” scare mongering. That’s the first reason I don’t subscribe to the “Global Warming” catechism but by no means the last.

  6. darrylb says:

It was the students of Schneider (I am assuming it is the same Berkley prof, now deceased) that put out that preposterous blacklist of who not to believe (Anderleg et.al)
Freemon Dyson of all people was listed third on that list of 496 names (as I recall)

  8. JBirks says:

The rhetoric was alarmist, but the NYTimes story itself contains some disclaimers that you’d never see today, even though the findings have a familiar ring.
    =============================================
“The possibility that the greenhouse effect could alter the earth’s temperature has long been debated. Scientists have agreed that carbon dioxide is increasing, but disagree on whether temperatures are also increasing.

“The major difficulty in accepting the greenhouse theory ‘has been the absence of observed warming coincident with the historic carbon dioxide increase,’ the scientists wrote.”

  9. Gail Combs says:

“We need to get some broad based support, to capture the public’s imagination…
So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements and make little mention of any doubts… Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest.”
    ~ Prof. Stephen Schneider

    • Dave N says:

Al Gore learned from Stephen “it’s OK to lie” Schneider. It doesn’t matter if a premise is completely untrue; make it scary so people give you money.

    • stewart pid says:

And the obsessive-compulsive alarmists always choose “being effective”!!

  10. R. Shearer says:

It’s sad that Schneider died young of a heart attack (on a plane returning from a climate conference in Sweden). So many unused frequent flyer miles, presumably gone to waste. Anyway, I wonder whether he would change his mind back to cooling today?

  11. Anto says:

And it will be four to five years after the current global warming scare finally unravels, that all of today’s climate “scientists” become advocates for the next, big Global Cooling scare.

This time, however, it will be based on real “carbon pollution” again, rather than the (intentionally) misnamed shorthand which they currently use to when they really mean “carbon dioxide pollution”.

Either way, their objective to deindustrialise the West will remain intact.

  12. Climatism says:

Reblogged this on Climatism and commented:
“The science is always settled, based on current funding opportunities.”

Government Climate Change science expert Dr Stephen Schneider agrees…
