If I remember correctly upto 50% of OZ Bush fires are deliberate, suspicious or caused by stupidity.
Most of them are caused by stupidity.
People insist on building right up to (and in) the bush, and are then apparently completely surprised when everything burns to the ground. Then a lot of other people have to risk their lives to save these people from their folly.

I do find that amusing. You’d think people would be smart enough to figure that out. Eucalyptus trees do burn nicely thanks to their natural oils. So why build your house sooo close to them without proper fire breaks around your property.

Almost 20 years ago I was watching rain bucketing down outside the windows while 1000 km away significant areas of bushland around Sydney were in flame.
Happens all the time – in the 50s Tasmania went up in flames.
